Passed the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments South was divided into 5 military parts South HAD to agree to the 13th, 14th, and 15th amend. before being brought back into the Union

away Blacks’ rights Equal protection under the law Gave ex-slaves a chance to vote Blacks in office

7 Freedmen’s Bureau Created in March 1865 Help ex-slaves in society
Gave ex-slaves land in the South Set up public schools

8 Freedmen’s Bureau Set up medical care Created courts for
Blacks – settle land and work arguments Many Whites hated the Freedmen’s Bureau – waste of government money

9 Ku Klux Klan Whites against Reconstruction Secret groups
Terrorized Blacks

10 Ku Klux Klan Congress passed laws to protect Blacks against KKK
Laws made it so the army could be used against the KKK KKK continued to grow anyway

11 White League Public groups – didn’t hide their faces Against Blacks
and abolitionists Mainly in Louisiana Used force and violence

12 Carpetbaggers White Northerners who came to the South
Took advantage of the poor in the South Got in the South’s business Wanted to take over and make money

13 Scalawags White Southerners who sided with the North Supported
Reconstruction Worked with Blacks Worked with the North to make money

14 End of Reconstruction KKK became more powerful Fewer Blacks voted
Scalawags and Carpetbaggers left the South Presidential Election of 1876
