25 Heidi Birdsong is Making a Difference
First semester was difficult with switching teachers, clinical instructors, back and forth. Second semester was difficult, too, starting on newer, harder material with Mrs. Dow for a few weeks, then Mrs. Birdsong and Mrs. Beam switching and essentially tag-teaming the teaching of our class on campus. I will never forget that day in lab with Mrs. Birdsong the day she took over. We had just taken an OB test that didn't go very well for us. She played us a video from a college graduation. It was a very uplifting speech the man delivered. After the video had us all basically in tears, Mrs. Birdsong had an equally uplifting and tearful speech to give to us. Between the video and Mrs. Birdsong, we all got one piece of advice: Just. Keep. Going. One test doesn't define you as a student. One test will not define your future career. We are exceptional people who have fought hard to be where we are and need to pick our sorry heads up and continue that fight. It got me through the semester. It was that day we all knew we got someone who was invested in us as we were in being here. Wyatt Lewis

26 Allen Drake is Making a Difference

Marko is very dedicated to the TRiO program and to the students that are in the program. He is a fine addition to the college. He contributes so much to the students and the college and has made the relationship between the students and the college so much stronger. He is still working on making improvements anywhere that he can to benefit both students and the college. I would like to recognize him for all of the effort that he puts into it and all of the good that comes out of it. I give Marko credit for me making it all the way to the end. He gave of his time unselfishly and became my rock through the good times and the rough times. I could come to him with anything that I was having a problem with and he would work feverishly trying to help me find a solution. He gave me a lot of good advice, and he encouraged me all the way. I have never had the support of my family in pursuing my dream of getting an education, and Marko made the biggest difference in my life by being my biggest fan. I wish that I could nominate him for man of the year, or better yet, hero of the year because that is what he has been to me. Ed always showed up to class with enthusiasm and was prepared. He didn't use slides. He taught class out of the book. He was very encouraging in speech writing. Ed made me realize how much I love giving speeches, so much that I chose to change my major to Speech Communications. Steven Brown

41 Brenda Hunzinger is Making a Difference
Mrs. Hunzinger was my instructor for Biology 101. My first attempt at this course was in August I was highly UNsuccessful at it and had absolutely NO desire to take it again. Twenty years later, I'm currently enrolled in this course, and I actually enjoy it. Her style of teaching is engaging and causes you to want to know more about the subject. I'm not just memorizing the material, I'm learning it. That makes all of the difference in the world. Shelissa Jones

Mr. Lynch was my Economics I instructor in Spring I appreciate his lesson plan structure and style of teaching. As my previous advisor and one of my teachers, Cathy had an outgoing and overall great spirit and always made me think outside of the box to explore new boundaries in and out of the classroom. My personal communication skills improved dramatically from attending her class. She will always be one of my favorite teachers and a good friend outside of Lake Land. Austin Ashworth

49 Eva Ritchey is Making a Difference
I took a speech class with Eva Ritchey as my instructor. She made such a difference by her positive, outgoing, confident, and caring attitude. I strive to have the attitude that she does. The thing that I took most from this class was not how to give a speech, which I did learn how to do quite well, but how to present myself and how important having a great attitude is. How you think and act has a huge influence on you and everyone around you. Audrey Scott

Mr. Brian Lynch always made an effort in trying to help me succeed. He always encouraged me and was available whenever I needed him. He was friendly and easy to approach, which made seeking help a lot easier. I enjoyed all my classes with Mr. Lynch and would recommend him to anyone. Kristina Pollman

55 Brenda Hunzinger is Making a Difference
After many years of being out of school I decided to go back. Mrs. Hunzinger was one of the first teachers that I had and made things very easy and very workable. She made me feel more comfortable with my degree choice (as for a short time she was my advisor) and helped me work towards that goal. More than anything she made classes interesting and challenging, creating a great environment for her students. Justin Click

59 Greg Capitosti is Making a Difference
Mr. Capitosti is one instructor I will never forget. I could not imagine anybody making chemistry enjoyable but that is his forte. When I struggled in chemistry, he always devoted his time to answering any questions I had and would even pull up my canvas quizzes to run through how to answer the questions properly. His drill sergeant style of lecturing encouraged me to keep going and to take chemistry seriously. He is the most dedicated professor I have had and his teaching ability/style is one of the many reason I enjoyed Chem II. Sarah Mummel

60 Nancy Grant is Making a Difference
Nancy became my mentor after my first class with her and within one year I exhausted all possible classes taught by her. She was the first one that made me aware of environmental hazards faced today and because of this, my lifestyle is not the same as it was two years ago. This year she has been kind enough to offer me a job in the backroom as a chemistry lab assistant and now potentially as a biology lab assistant. As I come to a close, I want to end with a quote she told me recently. "Evil triumphs when good men do nothing." I will never forget this quote and will apply it to all endeavors within my field of study. Nancy has affected my life, and I will never forget her. Sarah Mummel

65 Lara Bacino is Making a Difference
I absolutely loved going to her classes. Lara just made class so fun and relatable. She was so passionate about psych that it was interesting to learn. I have fallen in love with psychology, and I credit that to her because she was such a great teacher! You can see that she truly loves her students and is just down to earth and up front with us. I think that is part of being a teacher. If students can't relate to you on some level, then I think they have a harder time learning from you. She might not remember me, but I'll definitely remember her! Kalen Pennington

Heather has helped me in so many ways. Heather has been working with me since I was a sophomore in high school and has been so helpful and easy to work with. She made sure I was on the right track and had all the classes I needed in order to get my Business Administration degree. She helped set up a plan for me that would work with my schedule and always made sure I got into the classes I needed to. She is a wonderful person, and I'm so thankful that I got the chance to work with her through the years. I wouldn't be where I am today if it weren't for her helping me get started on this process! Thank you, Heather! Molly Yockey

70 Tom Caldwell is Making a Difference Rachel Finney
Tom is a wonderful example of someone who is quite well-rounded. His interests range from forestry to the Life Sciences to the fine arts to music to film and on and on. His background in the military is yet another aspect of his fascinating personality. He is anything but one-dimensional. Thanks to Tom, I was able to spend time working on the Tree-Care-Committee, and he has utilized his connections to people in Carbondale to introduce me to forestry societies that will be invaluable to me for business connections and field experience. Also, people from the IDNR and the Corps of Engineers seem to know Mr. Caldwell very well, which speaks volumes of how many activities, organizations, research projects, etc. that he is involved in all over the state of Illinois outside of work. This ambitious, brilliant, amicable, and charismatic man has affected so many different people in so many positive ways. He is without a doubt a great asset to Lake Land College. Rachel Finney

71 Brenda Hunzinger is Making a Difference Rachel Finney
Brenda was incredibly supportive - emotionally and academically - throughout my experience at LLC. She is charismatic, passionate about the Life Sciences, and engaging with all of her students. She always made sure to relate the material to real-life applications and all of the content was available online - via powerpoint presentations as well as video lectures that incorporated the powerpoint presentations; such resources cater to different learning types. The video lectures helped the material to resonate even more for me. It's because of instructors like Mrs. Hunzinger that students develop a strong interest in the Life Sciences, and for those who have already chosen that path, their passion is further amplified. Whenever I ran into problems with my work for the Corps of Engineers or had questions about the content in her class, her door was always open. Her high level of intellect, strength, positive attitude, and passion for life itself continues to inspire me every single day. Also, for women who strive to work in STEM fields, Brenda is a wonderful role model. Her work at Lake Land College is truly invaluable. Rachel Finney

75 Kathleen Daugherty is Making a Difference
She believes in every student. She encourages us and never puts us down. She always takes time with her students. She does go by the book but she always goes above and beyond to help her students succeed. It would have been easy to drop her classes when I was struggling. She is the best teacher I have had in college. Linda Hood

He was not an "easy" professor by any means, but he was able to present the material in such a way that I was able to relate Microbiology to real life situations. I feel like his class has prepared me for the difficulty level that I will face when I get into nursing school. Overall, he is a fabulous teacher, and I am truly blessed that I was able to take his class. Keri Clapp

78 Charles Jarrell is Making a Difference
He was my Intro to Education teacher and the division chair for Social Science. He always went above and beyond for his students and made sure that they were getting the most out of the education as possible. When a lot of classes got cancelled this semester, he worked with me and got me into another class that I normally couldn't just so I could get the class in and graduate on time. Most teachers wouldn't do that for students, but he genuinely cares. Megan Cress

Mr. Nwosu went out of his way to explain microbiology in such a way that it could easily be understood. Numerous times in nursing school I encountered a subject that would remind me of sitting in Mr. Nwosu's class. In that moment, I could almost hear him explain it again. Dr. Capitosti has been one of the most supportive and good-natured instructors I've ever encountered. I have taken General Chem I, am currently taking General Chem II, and will be taking Organic Chem I and II with him. As opposed to taking the latter two courses at U of I, I have chosen to take them with Dr. Capitosti because he is clearly very adept in his field and is an incredibly talented instructor. Additionally, his ability to connect the material with real life experiences as well as his entertaining dry sense of humor that accompanies his lectures make for a very positive and memorable learning experience for his students. Nursing school is tough. This is the general phrase you can expect to hear from just about everybody. In high school, I never studied or had to work hard at all. School came easy to me. Even starting at Lake Land with the variety of courses I took before Nursing seemed so easy. Getting into the program changed me completely. I actually struggled. For once in my life, I didn't feel smart. I struggled with this very much in my second semester of the RN program. I started to think I wasn't good enough to make it. Mrs. Porter went out of her way time and time again to help build me back up. She truly helped me see myself in a better light and helped me focus. I've learned to study properly, jump into the unknown, and make a name for myself. I feel like me again. I have had an extremely eye-opening experience here at Lake Land and will recommend this program to others because of it. She is an amazing instructor, and I am lucky to have been her student. Paula made me realize that although there are many designers out there who can use the same software, there are always different ideas flowing and people may like my ideas more than the competition. I can be as creative as I want and go for the jobs I want to go for. Just because we have the same education doesn't mean we have the same level of creativity which is why this field is so huge. I might never be able to come up with something someone else in my field does and vice versa which helps with the competition and also collaborations because you don't always have to compete. Working together is a huge part of getting the job done. Emily Rothrock

When I began school last fall, I was a week away from my due date. Though I managed to miss a minimal amount of school due to childbirth, Mr. Thomas was there to encourage me. He referred to me as one of his "rock star students." He continued to tell me that I was getting one of the best grades in the class, despite just recently having a baby and in addition to a job. None of my other teachers were rude towards me, but none of them seemed to have the same degree of faith in me as Mr. Thomas did. On the first day of class, after he read his rather frustrating syllabus to the class, I began to fret and thought "Great, I'm going to hate this class even more than I thought I would!"
