4 Areas of improvement - Fire Safety
Assembly point not defined. Whole building evacuation time needs to be reduced. (5-7min) Ideal time- 2min Awareness amongst junior needs to be increase. Emergency hooter should be installed. No proper Mock Drill Schedules is maintained. Training to teaching staff and non teaching staff on evacuation and also on the use of fire extinguishers need to be imparted. Stretchers should be available. Emergency preparedness document with emergency scenarios and responsibility need to be revised and made. 6 Fire Plans A written fire safety plan for Healthcare shall provide for the following: 1) Use of alarms 2) Transmission of alarm to fire department 3) Response to alarms 4) Isolation of fire 5) Assembly point clearly defined 6) Evacuation of Assembly area 7) Evacuation of smoke compartment 8) Preparation of floors / building for evacuation (Evacuation Plan). 9) First Aid provided 10)Head count 11)Search 12) Extinguishment of fire Extinguishment of fire 13) Review and preventive action Disaster Management Competency Network Team

8 Guideline of NDMA for School Safety - 2016
The guideline highlight upon the following key elements: Addresses the vertical of school safety in a more inclusive and holistic manner in the national policy sphere. Capacity building of children, teacher, school personnel, state and district education machinery on school safety and disaster preparedness Anchoring/implementing child cantered community based disaster risk reduction in the local context. Mainstreaming risk and safety education in the school curriculum. Linking school safety in the existing government schemes and policies. Strengthening coordination amongst institutional structures at the district, state, and national levels to promote effective child rights goverence in disaster situations

9 Fire Prevention & Fire Safety
Fire prevention and Fire safety measures should be part of initial school design, and also require regular maintenance and testing. The following must be ensured. Flammable, hazardous materials sources are limited, isolated, eliminated or secured. It includes electrical lines and appliances, heaters and stoves, natural gas Exits routes are clear to facilitate safe evacuation in case of fire or other emergencies. Deduction and alarm system Fire extinguishers and other materials are regularly refilled Electrical systems are maintained and operable in compliance with fire safety design criteria

Roles & Responsibilities of Team 1. Awareness Campaign Team Members teachers (preferable music, craft teachers) 02 parents 04-05 students of senior section active in the creative arts and public speaking Roles and Responsibility Prepare IEC (Information. Emergency Alarm Team Members 02 Teachers 02 Staffs (including school peon) 02-03 Students of the senior section Role sand Responsibilities Regular practice of warning signs, Bells, Alarms Alert the whole school for safe exit in case of any emergency through warning signs with pre decided alarm / siren. Evacuation Team Members 05-06 Teachers (including sports teachers) All present teachers in classroom Class monitor and hall monitors Roles and Responsibilities Maintain all exits in good Condition and Visible to all users Identify & maintain Assembly point Provide assistance to the differently-abled students for safe evacuation. Evacuation all in an orderly manner regularly. Ensure that the emergency assembly area is safe and accessible. 15 Roles and Responsibilities Report any structural damage to the SDMC
Roles & Responsibilities of Team 4. Search and Rescue Team Members 07-08 Teachers (including sports teachers NCC, NSS, Scouts and Guide Instructors) 08-10 students of senior section 02-03 parents (preferably from the armed/paramilitary force s/ police/fire service/ civil defence) Roles and Responsibilities Obtain information of missing school students/staffs/ teachers from evacuation team Search the missing persons quickly by physically , visually and vocally checking every room in the building Carrying the victims to the first aid post for medical treatment in case of injury and reporting to SDMC Report any structural damage to the SDMC Disaster Management Competency Network Team, Tata Steel India & S E Asia

5. Fire Fighting Team Members 05-06 Teachers 08-10 Students of Sr Section 2-3 parents (preferably from fire services/ civil defence) Roles and Responsibilities Make sure that all fire fighting equipment (extinguishers etc.) available in the school are in working condition Train on use of all the existing fire fighting systems / fire extinguishers. Fire safety assessment of the school premises & implementation In case of fire try to control it Have knowledge of main power switch to cut off in case of electrical short circuit / fire. 6. First Aid Team. Members 05 – 06 Teachers (including school doctor / nurse) Students of senior section (interested in health issues) Parents (preferably from the medical profession) Roles & Responsibilities Maintain and control the first aid room of the school Set up of first aid post and provide first aid to the victims. Maintain record Training on medical first aid Training to new members , refresher training to existing members Maintain info about local medical resources in the area. 7. Site Security Team Members School security officer School security staffs 02 Teachers Students from senior section 02 –03 Parents preferably from Para Military Force / Police Roles & Responsibility. Prevent entry of un-authorized person into the incident site. Security of premises & property. Maintain contact with local police. Transport Management Team Members School vehicle coordinator 02 Teachers 02 school staffs 04-05 Students of Senior Section Roles & Responsibility Maintain record of all the buses and their plying routes Prepare route chart. 9. Media Management Team Members.
