5 Putting Manipulatives to Work:
Developing Geometric Measurement in Grades 3-4: Area, Perimeter, Angle Measure with Color Tiles and AngLegs Sara Delano Moore, Ph.D. Director of Mathematics & Science ETA hand2mind 7 July 2015

6 Putting Manipulatives to Work: Series Overview
June 2: Developing Number Sense K-5 with Cuisenaire Rods, Rekenreks, and Place Value Chips July 7: Developing Geometric Measurement in Grades 3-4 – Area, Perimeter, Angle Measure with Color Tiles and AngLegs August 4: Developing Expressions & Equations Grades 6-8 with Algebra Tiles and Algeblocks

7 Send out a search party! Are there manipulatives hiding in THAT closet? Have you received new tools as part of new programs and you aren’t sure how to use them?

8 Geometric Measurement
Provides context for operations Area as a measurement connects to an area model for multiplication Angles in a circle relate to fractions of the circle Supports problem solving Area and perimeter problems from the real world

9 Learning about Area with Color Tiles
Unit square tiles (often 1” square) used to tile a shape to show the area of the shape In rectangular regions, area can be calculated by repeated addition or multiplication. Area is additive; complex shapes can be partitioned into simpler ones. The unit of measure changes when calculating area, from length units to square units. = 4 + 4 = 2 x 4 =

10 Traditional Area Problem
Diana’s living room is 5 meters wide and 4 meters long. What is the area of the room? The carpet she selected costs $25 per square meter. How much will the carpet for the room cost? $25 $25 Area = Length x Width

11 More Interesting Problems
15 feet Brandon needs to find the area of his rectangular bedroom. The length of the room is 15 feet. The perimeter of the room is 50 feet. ? feet ? feet 15 feet

12 Going Further Tommy & Tessa want to fence in a play area for their dog, Moose. Moose is a big dog, and they want to give him as much room as they can. They have 64 feet of fence. They can use up to 36 feet of the side of the barn as one side of the play area. The area must be rectangular and each side must be a whole number of feet. Determine the best size for Moose’s play area. BARN

13 Learning About AngLegs
All legs the same color are the same length. Legs snap together and rotate freely. Place the protractor on top of a figure. Snap together and use the grooves to measure. video

14 Measuring Angles 60°

15 Estimating & Measuring Angle Size
60° How does the angle compare to a right angle? 120° How does the angle compare to a straight angle?

16 Angles and Shapes Classifying Triangles By sides By angles 110° 40°
30° 40° 60°

17 Angles and Shapes Classifying quadrilaterals By sides By angles
All figures have two pairs of parallel sides By sides By angles
