2 ORGANS

3 Hypothalamus: it is located in the brain and controls water balance, sleep, temperature, appetite, and blood pressure. There are 10 organs in the endocrine system.

4 Pineal body: it is also located in the brain and produces the hormone melatonin.

5 Pituitary: it is located at the base of the brain
Pituitary: it is located at the base of the brain. It controls many functions of the other endocrine glands.

6 Thyroid and parathyroids : both are located in front of the neck
Thyroid and parathyroids : both are located in front of the neck. They help the body’s calcium balance.

7 Thymus : it is located in the upper part of the chest and produces T-lymphocytes.

8 Adrenal glands: they are located on top of both kidneys
Adrenal glands: they are located on top of both kidneys. They work with hypothalamus and the pituitary gland.

9 Pancreas: it is located behind the stomach
Pancreas: it is located behind the stomach. It plays a role in digestion and also as a hormone production.

10 Ovary : it is located on both sides of the uterus
Ovary : it is located on both sides of the uterus. It produces estrogen and progesterone.

11 Testes : They produce testosterone and sperm.

16 HORMONES

17 The endocrine system is made up of glands that produce and secrete hormones.

18 This system results in stable blood concentrations of the hormones that are regulated by the pituitary gland.

19 Hormones are chemical messengers created by the body
Hormones are chemical messengers created by the body. They transfer information from one set of cells to another to coordinate the functions of different parts of the body.

26 DISEASES

27 What goes wrong? When our bodies have too much or too little of ANY hormone it can be really dangerous. An example is if the pituitary gland produces too much growth hormone, a teenager may grow excessively tall and if it produces too little he/she would be unusually short.

28 Type one diabetes Insulin helps the body convert sugars and starches into energy. Diabetes is a condition in which the pancreas doesn’t produce enough of insulin (a hormone) or our body does not effectively use the one it produces.

29 Symptoms of Type 1 diabetes
Increased thirst and frequent urination. Extreme hunger. Weight loss. Fatigue. Blurred vision. Increased thirst and frequent urination: With too much sugar in your bloodstream, fluid is pulled from your tissues. This may leave you thirsty. As a result, you may drink — and urinate — more than usual. Extreme hunger. Without enough insulin to move sugar into your cells, your muscles and organs become depleted of energy. This triggers intense hunger that may persist even after you eat. Without insulin, the sugar in your food never reaches your energy-starved tissues. Weight loss. Despite eating more than usual to relieve hunger, you may lose weight — sometimes rapidly. Without the energy sugar supplies, your muscle tissues and fat stores may simply shrink. Fatigue. If your cells are deprived of sugar, you may become tired and irritable. Blurred vision. If your blood sugar level is too high, fluid may be pulled from your tissues — including the lenses of your eyes. This may affect your ability to focus clearly.

31 Adrenal insufficiency
This happens when the adrenal glands do not produce ENOUGH corticosteroids. Symptoms : Weakness, fatigue, abdominal pain, nausea, dehydration, and skin changes. Most common in teens, Addison disease: produces insufficient amount of steroid hormones .

32 Polycystic Ovary Syndrome
Normally the ovaries and adrenal glands of all women release small amounts of androgen. When women have PCOS they produced this type of hormone in higher amounts. However higher levels of androgens led to hormone imbalance and interfere with ovulation and normal egg development. Fijarme si mencionan androgens en hormones, si no lo ponen, poner: Androgens play a role in helping women grow and develop strong bones and muscles strength, and in sexual function.

33 Symptoms of PCOS Presence of hormonal problems Excess hair growth
Irregular menstrual cycles Polycystic ovaries Not all patients have all these features. PCOS results in irregular or infrequent ovulation and irregular and infrequent menstruation in most women

34 Menopause The changes of menopause begin when your ovaries, no longer produce eggs. The production of female hormones decreases at this time. Two hormones made in the ovaries are estrogen and progesterone which help to regulate a woman's monthly period. A woman in mid-life has began to drop their levels of estrogen. The reproductive organs gradually shut down, just as they became active during puberty. Women notice that their periods become lighter, farther apart and then eventually, they end.

35 Menopause symptoms The first menopause symptoms are hot flashes and mood swings. Some women have mental confusion and sometimes a sense of sadness or depression. Also during sex there is a lack of desire. Usually and eventually, menopause symptoms disappear.

36 Menopause – Organs it affects
BLOOD VESSELS - Quick body temperature changes. BRAIN/NERVES - Moods that change frequently or a tendency toward sadness, anger, or confusion, and in extreme cases, depression. GENITALS - Problems with dryness, itching, pain during sex, or irritated tissues in and around the vagina URINARY SYSTEM - Problems with sudden or frequent urinating BONES – A risk of weaker bones, osteoporosis, and bone breaks HEART - Acceleration of risk factors associates with heart attacks and other heart problems.
