9 Brief Method Overview Major XRF Components: 1) X-ray source 2) Analyzed sample 3) Detector 4) Electronics and interpreting software X-ray source irradiates sample atoms in the sample emit secondary (characteristic) x-ray radiation detector registers incoming radiation software interprets it into chemical composition: The energy of characteristic radiation signifies certain elements, while the intensity correlates with the amount of elements in the sample. Detection: Range of detectable elements is limited by the energy of characteristic radiation of the elements. The lower the energy the harder it is to register it due to absorption by the environment and detector limitations. 10 Empirical calibration
Quantitative Analysis. Calibration Methods Fundamental parameters calibration (standardless method) Based on theoretical relationship of measured intensities and the concentration of elements in the sample. Used for samples in which 100% of elements are detectable, such as alloys. Empirical calibration Based on the analysis of standards with known chemical composition. The sample should contain similar quantities of analyzed element to the standard. Used for samples with high percentage of undetectable elements such as soils and minerals RoHS, WEEE, etc. Combined method Sometimes fundamental parameters method is refined by empirical calibration. 14 Analytical capabilities of the method
XRF allows to analyze all groups of alloys including non-standard alloys Carbon and alloy steel, Aluminum alloys, Copper alloys, Nickel alloys, Titanium alloys XRF demonstrates excellent limits of detection for most important elements in alloys For example: Al, Si, P, Cd, Sn, Sb, Pb in copper alloys from 0,01% P and S in steels and pig iron from 0,005% Mg in Aluminum alloys from 0,05% Range of detected elements: XRF analyzes elements from Na (11).
