1 Why the new versions A case for confusion

2 You are not wrong This presentation is not to charge anyone with sin or to condemn your choice of bible versions. This series of lessons is only to point out the lie and plot of the enemy. 10 The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have [it] more abundantly. - Jhn 10:10 KJV. The devil is not a friend to the word of god he is an enemy to god and to you.

3 What’s missing

4 1 Corinthians 5:7 KJV Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, as ye are unleavened. For even Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us: - niv Get rid of the old yeast, so that you may be a new unleavened batch--as you really are. For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed. Nasb Clean out the old leaven so that you may be a new lump, just as you are in fact unleavened. For Christ our Passover also has been sacrificed. Esv Cleanse out the old leaven that you may be a new lump, as you really are unleavened. For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed. Amp Clean out the old leaven so that you may be a new batch, just as you are, still unleavened. For Christ our Passover Lamb has been sacrificed.

5 Niv Therefore, since Christ suffered in his body, arm yourselves also with the same attitude, because whoever suffers in the body is done with sin. Amp Therefore, since [a]Christ suffered in the flesh [and died for us], arm yourselves [like warriors] with the same purpose [being willing to suffer for doing what is right and pleasing God], because whoever has suffered in the flesh [being like-minded with Christ] is done with [intentional] sin [having stopped pleasing the world], Therefore, since Christ has suffered in the flesh, arm yourselves also with the same purpose, because he who has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin, asv Therefore, since Christ has suffered in the flesh, arm yourselves also with the same purpose, because he who has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin, 1 peter 4:1 kjv Forasmuch then as Christ hath suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves likewise with the same mind: for he that hath suffered in the flesh hath ceased from sin;

7 Hebrews 1:3 Who being the brightness of [his] glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high; - Niv The Son is the radiance of God's glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven. Esv He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,

There are over 900 different translations of the Bible into English which bible is the right translation ? Which bible contains the pure words of God? Which bible speaks to me as an individual? When I lead someone to Christ which of the over 900 translations do I suggest to a new convert?

13 What would happen if we as a church read our bibles at one time what would happen? Would this exercise bring unity or confusion This is the aim of the enemy to bring confusion in the house of god. The church has always been a place of positive and decisive direction. What if the decisive direction no longer existed? What if the bible which is handed down from God broke off into different version and each version had it own meaning or understanding would this bring unity or confusion. What about those who are new born what would it do to their fragile faith?

14 Examples of confusion 2 Timothy 2:15 KJV 2 Timothy 2:15 NIV
Study to show yourself approved unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth.

23 How it all Got Started

24 What happened Christianity in the beginning was influenced the apostles in Jerusalem. when Stephen was martyred the church scattered to the four winds. Paul who had become a dominant figure in the church was based in Antioch. 4 Therefore they that were scattered abroad went every where preaching the word. - Act 8:4 KJV

25 Barnabas and Paul taught in the city of Antioch
Barnabas and Paul taught in the city of Antioch. When you read the epistles of Paul you see his focus on what Jesus did for the church, what Jesus is to the church and that he, the son of God is leader of the church. The church went through 10 horrendous persecutions. The roman government tried to wipe out Christianity. However the blood of the martyrs served to promote Christianity the Diocletian persecution began in A.D. 303 The fatal day fixed upon to commence the bloody work, was the twenty-third of February, A.D. 303, that being the day in which the Terminalia were celebrated, and on which, as the cruel pagans boasted, they hoped to put a termination to Christianity. On the appointed day, the persecution began in Nicomedia, on the morning of which the prefect of that city repaired, with a great number of officers and assistants, to the church of the Christians, where, having forced open the doors, they seized upon all the sacred books, and committed them to the flames.  The whole of this transaction was in the presence of Diocletian and Galerius, who, not contented with burning the books, had the church levelled with the ground. This was followed by a severe edict, commanding the destruction of all other Christian churches and books; and an order soon succeeded, to render Christians of all denomination outlaws.

26 Alexandrian theology Clement believed that knowledge would be rewarded in the next life and this is the reason for the allegorical view of the exegesis of scripture. The bible was inspired, useful, true in every letter, but literal interpretation was not necessarily the correct one It was therefore proper to say that the Son of God was born an infant, that died. By teaching, by example, by offering himself a propitiatory victim to God, by paying a the devil a ransom Christ saves men. Men gradually free themselves from the earthy by meditation, by abstinence, by the vision of God. Clement was the first head master of the Alexandrian school in Egypt Origen flowed clement Elwell, walter, a ,pg 31

27 Who was Origen Origen, Latin in full Oregenes Adamantius (born c. 185, probably Alexandria, Egypt—died c. 254, Tyre, Phoenicia [now Ṣūr, Lebanon]), the most important theologian and biblical scholar of the early Greek church. His greatest work is the Hexapla, which is a synopsis of six versions of the Old Testament.

28 Alexandrian theology Origen said, By which it is shown that that breath of God’s power always existed, having no beginning save God Himself. Nor was it fitting that there should be any other beginning save God Himself, from whom it derives its birth. And according to the expression of the apostle, that Christ “is the power of God,” it ought to be termed not only the breath of the power of God, but power out of power.

29 Alexandrian theology And I am therefore of opinion that the will of the Father ought alone to be sufficient for the existence of that which He wishes to exist. For in the exercise of His will He employs no other way than that which is made known by the counsel of His will. And thus also the existence of the Son is generated by Him. For this point must above all others be maintained by those who allow nothing to be unbegotten, i.e., unborn, save God the Father only.

30 Alexandrian theology the logos is subordinate to the father and has some characteristics similar to the logos of the Gnostics The soul is preexistent; Jesus took on some preexistent human soul There is no physical resurrection of Christ nor will there be a second coming. Man will not have a physical resurrection Hell is nonexistent; purgatory, of which Paul and peter must partake, does exist All including the devil will be reconciled to god Did not believe god made the world in six days Emasculation is for for all males Riplinger pg. 7

31 These beliefs carried by these most learned men came from their gnostic and neo-platonic theology.
Neo-Platonist believed: There is a god that exist but is invisible. He is a thought called the one. He is a self thinking intellect which is regarded as true being. (audi pg. 605) God does not care for his creation and leaves it to it own powers. The soul is born many times up to ten thousand years. (Elwell pg. 859) The wicked are sent to a place of punishment until their sins are paid for. (Elwell pg. 859) Evil is not a reality and nothing is evil in its nature. (Elwell pg. 757) The one called into being time and the bright Gods of heaven and to them he gave charge of peopling the world. (riplinger pg. 540) Believes god made man to become gods. (riplinger pg. 540) Believes the universe contains many beings more divine than man-daimons and gods who are daemons of a superior order. (riplinger pg. 540)

32 Constantine the great ordered the ceasing of Christian persecution
Constantine the great ordered the ceasing of Christian persecution. Around 350 ad he ordered eusebius to make fifty copies of the whole bible. Eusebius used the Alexandrian manuscripts to produce these bibles. Researchers of this subject believe they were produced in Alexandria or were produced by Alexandrian scribes. Eusebius succumbed to the teaching of the Alexandrian intellectual, origin. From these 50 uncials we get the codex vaticanus and codex Sinaiticus. The codex vaticanus was located in the Vatican for centuries Until the discovery by Constantin von Tischendorf of the Sinaiticus text, the Codex Vaticanus was unrivaled. The Codex Sinaiticus came to the attention of scholars in the19th century at Saint Catherine's Monastery in the Sinai Peninsula in Egypt. Mckendrick p. 174

34 Fenton john Anthony hort
Believed bible was like any other book Believed that bible was full of errors Believed that roman catholic churches doctrine was to be excepted by all Hort thought that evangelicals were perverted than untrue Did not believe the garden of Eden existed Hort did not believe that god created the world in six days Did not believe in an evil being called the devil Did not believe in hell Hort did not believe in the atonement of Christ he called it a “universal Heresy.” Gipps pg Both men were disciples of the Oxford Movement. It was a movement back to the theology of the Catholic Church. John Newman was the architect of the movement that converted many an Anglican Minister into Catholics.

35 Brooke foss Westcott Believed that all was needed for salvation was baptism Did not believe the first three chapters of genesis was literal Believed mosses and David were not literal people but figments of the imagination of the Jews Did not believe in the miracles or the miracles of the bible Believed that the coming of the lord was the fall of Jerusalem Heaven is a state and not a place He also believed that all Christians should embrace roman catholic theology Westcott believed the mansions Jesus was referring to was a place of refreshment along a road Believed the bible was no more inspired than Shakespeare “Origen, in a word, laid down the lines of systematic.. Criticism.” (riplinger pg. 531)

36 Wescott and hort’s private thoughts and practices
Hort says, the near romish view seems to me nearer and more likely to lead to truth than the evangelicals. Wescott says of the authorized version , I am most anxious to provide something to replace them 1852 wescott and hort hand out ghostly guild literature Hort says, Protestantism is only parenthetical and temporary Hort, evangelicals seem to me perverted… there are, I fear, still more serious differences between us on the subject of authorty of the bible Wescott, the idea of la salette appearances of the virgin was that of god revealing himself, now, not in one form, but in many Pogo sticking through the index of The Founders of Psychical Research reveals the following ‘company’ in which our esteemed bible revisers find themselves. Automatic Writing, Benson, Biblical Criticism, Mme, H.P. Blavatsky, Clairvoyance, ‘Control’ Spirit, Crystal- gazing, Charles Darwin, Sigmund Freud, Ghost Club, F.J. A Hort, Hypnotism, ‘Inspirational’ writing and speaking in early British Spiritualism, C.G. Jung, Levitation, J.B. Lightfoot, Mediumship, Mesmerism, Multiple Personality, Plato, Society for Psychical Research, Spiritualism, Sweden borne Society, Synthetic Society, Telepathy, Trance Medium, B.F. Westcott.

37 [T]his may be cowardice – I have a sort of craving that our text [‘New’ Greek Testament] should be cast upon the world before we deal with maters likely to brand us with suspicion. I mean a text issued by men already known for what will undoubtedly be treated as dangerous heresy will find great difficulties in finding its way to regions which it might otherwise hope to reach and whence it would not be easily banished by subsequent alarms. . .If only we speak our minds, we shall not be able to avoid giving grave offense to. . .the miscalled orthodoxy of the day.( Rosemary’s baby, the S.P.R., (The Society for Psychical Research) concurs in its official history, the S.P.R.: An Outline of Its History, by W.H. Salter. It refers to the transmutation of “Westcott, Hort, Lightfoot and Benson’s” “Ghostly Guild” into the S.P.R., calling the Ghostly Guild “the parent society,” “a society from which our own can claim direct descent” and “the forerunner of so unorthodox a subject as ours.” They list their interests as “telepathy, pure clairvoyance, communication from ‘some spirit’ in or out of the body…the nature and extend of any influence which may be exerted by one mind upon another…disturbances in houses reputed to be haunted…physical phenomena commonly called spiritualistic.” .( Hort wrote to Westcott regarding the Protestant's teaching of the "priesthood of the believer" as being a "crazy horror"!3 He believed neither in a literal Garden of Eden nor that Adam's fall differed in any degree from that of any of his descendants.4 In a March 4, 1890 letter to the Archbishop of Canterbury on Old Testament Criticism, Westcott gave his "amen" to Hort's last sentiment by penning: "No one now, I suppose, holds that the first three chapters of Genesis, for example, give a literal history – I could never understand how any one reading them with open eyes could think they did.

38 Wescott and hort private thought and practices
On October 17, 1865 Hort wrote "I have been persuaded for many years that Mary-worship and 'Jesus-worship' have very much in common in their causes and their results". On one occasion, Mr. Westcott was near a monastery and, upon going into the chapel, found a pieta.1 In writing from France to his fiancée in concerning the event he wrote: "Had I been alone, I could have knelt there for hours." (1881_Revision_of_KJB_Which_Version_Is_The_Bible_Dr_Floyd_Nolen_Jones_PhD_T hD.pdf)

39 Westcott and hort’s arguments for the new Alexandrian text
The more complicated the text the more reliable it is The oldest is the best The time for a new text had come The byzantine text time had run its course and it was their job to obliterate it from Christian thought The ideas of Jesus dying for the sins of humanity were absurd and fraught with error

40 Higher criticism, arising from 19th century European rationalism, generally takes a secular approach asking questions regarding the origin and composition of the text, …. The principles of higher criticism are based on reason rather than revelation and are also speculative by nature. Westcott and hort did not believe the kjv text because it was not rational

41 The trap is set In 1870 the church of England called for a revision of the king James bible. The following rules were applied to this venture 1.To introduce few alterations as possible into the text of the king James bible 2. To limit…the expression of any alterations to the language of the authorized version. (gipp pg. 263) It was about this time that Westcott and hort finished their own revision of the Greek text from the vaticanus and Sinaiticus. However, their Greek text went unpublished and its existence unknown.

42 Wescott and hort secretly submitted their greek text to members of the committee without them knowing it was not the authorized text. There were also members on the committee such as dr. light foot that agreed with them. As dr. Wilkinson testifies, “ the new greek upon which Westcott and hort had been working for 20 years was, portion by portion, secretly committed in the had of the revision committee. Their Greek text was strongly radical and revolutionary. The revisers followed the guidance of the two Cambridge editors, wescott and hort, who were constantly at their elbow, and whose radical greek new testament, deviating the furthest possible from the received text (kjv), is to all intents and purposes the greek new testament followed by the revision committee. this greek text in the main follows the vaticanus and Sinaiticus manuscripts These mss had been refused by the writers of the Bishops Bible, Tyndale refused to use the them, Erasmus one the first men to put bible in English had these Mss in his possession and also refused to use them. The King James committee also had access to them and refused them. Ask yourselves why did these men chooses to use them.

43 Betrayal on the committee
Dr. smith was one the committee members and some on the committee wanted him expelled because he was a Unitarian wescott threatened to quit if he left. (gipp, pg. 264) Smith commended, concerning the virgin birth of Jesus. If virgin was replaced with young wife this change gives room to doubt the virgin birth of Christ. (gipp, pg. 264)

48 Erasmus Erasmus lived from , he was considered the greatest mind of his era. He was schooled in the catholic system but was no friend of the system. He often wrote scathing commentaries against the practices of the roman pontiff. In 1516 he produced his own Latin text correcting Jerome’s vulgate. in 1527 he produce a bible with three columns one Greek, the other Jerome’s Latin vulgate and the last his own translation of the text in Latin. Erasmus Greek text was used to produce all of the English bibles that would follow

49 John Wycliffe Wycliffe was born in 1330 and died in his greatest accomplishment was to translate the bible from Latin into English. He was determined that the common people would here the word of god in their own tongue. Mr. Wycliffe sent out young men who preached the word of god. These men were called lollards. If these young men were caught they were tortured and burnt at the stake. He challenged indulgences: "It is plain to me that our prelates in granting indulgences do commonly blaspheme the wisdom of God." He repudiated the confessional: "Private confession … was not ordered by Christ and was not used by the apostles." He reiterated the biblical teaching on faith: "Trust wholly in Christ; rely altogether on his sufferings; beware of seeking to be justified in any other way than by his righteousness."

50 William Tyndale

51 William Tyndale was the Captain of the Army of Reformers, and was their spiritual leader. Tyndale holds the distinction of being the first man to ever print the New Testament in the English language. Tyndale was a true scholar and a genius, so fluent in eight languages that it was said one would think any one of them to be his native tongue. He is frequently referred to as the "Architect of the English Language", (even more so than William Shakespeare) as so many of the phrases Tyndale coined are still in our language  A clergyman hopelessly entrenched in Roman Catholic dogma once taunted William Tyndale with the statement, "We are better to be without God’s laws than the Pope’s". Tyndale was infuriated by such Roman Catholic heresies, and he replied, "I defy the Pope and all his laws. If God spare my life ere many years, I will cause the boy that drives the plow to know more of the scriptures than you!“ William-tyndale.com

52 King James bible In 1604 between scholars gathered together to write the king james bible. It was thus written because king James decreed that it be written The greatest scholars of the 17th century were gathered to undertake this colossal task. The work was divided into two camps. Greek scholars and Hebrew scholars. These men were broken up into 8 companies. 8. Every particular man of each company to take the same chapter of chapters; and having translated or amended them severally by himself, where he thinks good, all to meet together, to confer what they have done, and agree for their part what shall stand. “9. As any one company hath dispatched any one book in this manner, they shall send it to the rest to be considered of seriously and judiciously: for his Majesty is very careful in this point. “10. If any company, upon the review of the book so sent, shall doubt or differ upon any places, and therewithal to send their reasons; to which if they consent not, the difference to be compounded at the general meeting, which is to be the chief persons of each company, at the end of the work. “11. When any place of special obscurity is doubted of, letters to be directly by authority to send to any learned in the land for his judgment in such a place.

54 What think about god’s word
Calvin Linton, niv committee says “The bible is God’s message and not his words…the bible is the wrong side of a beautiful embroidery. The picture is still there but knotted, blurry-not beautiful, not perfect. ..Christians amusingly uniform, who presume the holy spirit dictated the actual words of the test of the original writers.” (gail riplinger, pg.261 Youngblood a member of the committee writes “ ifelt bound to abandon the god-dictated-every word-from-cover to cover.

55 And shall cast them into the furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth. Matthew 13:50 armstrongism Niv editor “The concept of hell is part and parcel of folklore…as a place of punishment…when a human being dies he is dead.” (riplinger pg.292) “Regarding further punishment after death, the text is silent.” r. laird harris (riplinger pg.292)

56 And if thy hand offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter into life maimed, than having two hands to go into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched: mark 9:43 Jehovah witness Niv editor Hell applies to the common grave of all manking…the word contains no thought of hint of pain The niv translators… came to a decision regarding the meaning of the word hell..the meaning grave fits…the translation grave is the most appropriate one. The term hell and the grave are synonymous..no more darkness, dissolution, and dust…decay or perish in the grave.”
