Why am I here? Two reasons Some have little knowledge of the Bible and get frustrated in trying to read it Others have some knowledge and want to improve their understanding This course will help both groups!

10 The Bible is God’s Word

11 The Bible The most important book ever written It is the Word of God.
He told the men who wrote it what they must write down.

12 The Bible The Bible is not one book. It has 66 books
Written at different times Written by different men. It is divided into two parts that are called testaments.

13 The Bible The Old Testament has 39 books.
The New Testament has 27 books. 'Testament' = agreement or covenant. An Old Agreement & A New Agreement.

15 John 3:16 The Bible Each book is divided into: Book ~ John, chapters
verses. For example: Book ~ John, chapter 3, verse 16. John 3:16

16 John 3:16 ‘For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.'

17 When Was the Bible Written?
The Old Testament Moses wrote the first books Malachi wrote the last book The Present 1000 years <BC 1400> <BC 400> <1400 years> The Birth of Jesus Christ, the Son of God

20 The Bible the 'Scriptures'
= 'something written'.

21 The Old Testament was written in Hebrew Written on paper called papyrus. These were rolled up into scrolls.

22 The New Testament was written in Greek.
It was also written on papyrus Then strips of animal skin called parchment.

23 Bible Translations From the original Hebrew (Old Testament) and the original Greek (New Testament), the Bible has been translated into most languages For each language, there are usually a number of translations or versions available. In English, an important translation made 400 years ago is called the King James Version (KJV) In these lessons we use a more modern version called the New International Version (NIV)

24 Who wrote the Bible? This is called the 'Inspiration' of the Bible.
The men who wrote it did not write down their own ideas; God told them what to write. This is called the 'Inspiration' of the Bible.

'The Spirit of the LORD spoke through me; his word was on my tongue.' Jeremiah 36:2 'Take a scroll and write on it all the words I have spoken to you concerning Israel, Judah and all the other nations from the time I began speaking to you in the reign of Josiah till now'

26 Who wrote the Bible? 2 Timothy 3:16-17 (NIV)
'All Scripture is God breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work'. 2 Timothy 3:16-17 (NASB) All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching…….”

27 Who wrote the Bible? God, through his Holy Spirit power, guided and directed men to write down his words.

28 How can we understand what God wants?
By reading the Bible By praying to God for help to understand.

29 The Apostle Paul tells us :
‘For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through endurance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.‘ Romans 15:4

30 Review Questions Which books tell us about the life and death of Jesus? What does 'Testament' mean? How many books are there in the Bible ? What is 'Inspiration'?  What must we do to understand God's message?
