Presentation on theme: "Aim: Why is water such an important molecule?"— Presentation transcript:

1 Aim: Why is water such an important molecule?
Do Now: What elements make up water? Homework: read pages 4-9 in your book and answer any questions on those pages

2 The roles of water on earth
Water influences weather- rain, sleet, snow Water shapes the surface of the earth- water wears away rock

3 Water supports life- nearly all biochemical reactions need water, water regulates temperature and helps transport substances Water supports human activities- bathing, cleaning, agriculture

4 Water is a polar molecule
Water is made up of the elements hydrogen and oxygen Polarity- charges on parts of a molecule, molecules of water attract one another

5 Properties of water Cohesion- water molecules stick together
Adhesion- water molecules stick to other surfaces

6 Aim: Why is water such an important molecule?
Do Now: What does the word cohesion mean? Homework: Read pages in your book and answer any questions

7 Properties of water It can absorb large amounts of energy- high specific heat It dissolves many other things- universal solvent

8 The Water Cycle Movement of water between the atmosphere, land, oceans, and living things makes up the water cycle

9

10 Practice: Read and complete page in your book

11 Aim: How does water change state?
Do Now: What are the three states of matter? Homework: complete page 25 in your book

12 Key terms Evaporation- when liquid water changes into water vapor
Transpiration- the release of water vapor into the air by plants Sublimation- when solid water changes directly into water vapor

13 Condensation- change of state from a gas to a liquid
Precipitation- any form of water that falls to the earth from the clouds Runoff- water flowing downhill into river, lakes, and oceans

14 Infiltration- water seeping into the ground
Practice- complete page 22 with the key terms from the lesson today

15 Aim: How can we practice with the water cycle?
Do Now: Why does evaporation occur? Homework: page 45 in your book
