3 KS1 SPaG tests consist of: English grammar, punctuation and spellingPaper 1: spelling (expected that the test will take approximately 15 minutes to complete, writing the 20 missing words in the answer booklet)Paper 2: questions (focusing on pupil’s knowledge of grammar, punctuation and vocabulary expected that the test will take approximately 20 minutes to complete but is not strictly timed)
4 SPELLING RULES Children working at the expected standard will segment spoken words into phonemes and represent these by graphemes, spelling many correctlyspell many of the common exception wordsknows the difference in meaning between taught homophones and near homophones e.g. their/there/they’re, quite/quietspell some words with contracted forms , where the apostrophe represent an omitted letter or lettersuse the possessive apostrophe (singular) e.g. the girl’s bookadd suffixes to spell words correctly in their writinge.g. –ment, -ness, -ful, -less, -lyYear 2 spelling rules (see Appendix 1 of the new national curriculum)
5 PUNCTUATION Children working at the expected standard will demarcate most sentences with capital letters and full stops and with some use of question marks and exclamation marksuse both familiar and new punctuation correctly most of the time, including full stops, capital letters, exclamation marks, question marks, commas for lists and apostrophes for contracted forms and the possessive.
6 GRAMMAR Children working at the expected standard will use sentences in different forms in their writing (statements, questions, exclamations and commands)use some expanded noun phrases to describe and specify e.g. the blue butterflyuse present and past tense consistentlyexpand sentences using co-ordination (and, or, but) and some subordination (when, if that, because)use appropriate adjectives and adverbs to give essential information e.g. plain flour, rather than ‘flour’ or ‘fluffy, white flour’
