Geography & HEI of India ISN p.31
Sort the information into the correct column: The Indus and the Ganges rivers flow through India. Farmers raised wheat, barley and cotton. They made cotton fabric, copper and bronze tools. India’s tall mountains, Himalayas and the Hindu Kush, block cold northern winds, so temperatures are generally warm. Seasonal winds called monsoons give India a dry winter and a rainy summer. The first Indian civilization started in the Indus River valley. The rivers carry water for irrigation and leave behind silt that makes the soil fertile for crops. The rains sometimes cause flooding. Indians traveled and traded on the water with other lands. Geography Human Environment Interaction (HEI)

HINDUISM- OVERVIEW Of CHART
Characteristics HINDUISM- OVERVIEW Of CHART Geographic Origins India The Indian people began to question how the world came into being. This led to a belief that one spirit or supreme being, known as Brahman, governed (was in charge of) the universe. Founders No founder Teachings Name of god: Braham taking the form of THREE deities: Brahma, the creator of the universe; Vishnu, the universe’s protector; and Shiva, the universe’s destroyer Holy book: many sacred texts, The Vedas are the oldest scriptures Traditions & Customs Traditions: Diwali, the Festival of Lights, marks the beginning of the year Customs: Belief in the existence of many paths to God through faithfully carrying out their assigned jobs in the Caste system, meditation (calming the mind) and yoga (exercise, breathing techniques, and diet) Place of Worship: temples and individual homes Symbol of Hinduism: The OM believed to be the sound of the universe Beliefs Reincarnation: the soul never dies but is continually reborn until it becomes divinely enlightened. Freedom from earthly desires comes from many lifetimes of worship, knowledge, and virtuous arts. Karma: the cycle of a person’s deeds (good or bad) in one life determining the rebirth in a higher or lesser life form in the next life/cycle. Caste (Social Class) System
ISN p. 34 Hindus must faithfully carry out their assigned and hereditary duties in life according to their caste system. Caste members lived, ate, married, and worked with their own group. A person born into one caste rarely changed castes or mixed with members of other castes. Social rules defined how to behave within a caste and when in the presence people from other castes Each caste had a clearly defined role. Members of each caste were obligated to look after one another, so each caste had its own support system. These traditions were later incorporated into the Hindu religion. m/watch?v=ERxLSURibe Q

If you said, “BLUEPRINTS,” you’re right!
24
What do BLUEPRINTS have to do with Ancient India?
Think about the connection between the religion of Ancient India, Hinduism, and their division of labor in the Caste System. How do they connect/relate? The Caste System is a non-fluid system designed to meet the needs of the civilization with specialized and hereditary jobs. With such a complex social structure or division of labor- How would the Caste System impact the blueprint or design of the cities in Ancient India?
25
The purpose of today’s activity is to design a blueprint for a well-planned city in India based on your understanding of the Caste System.
26
Follow along with your handout, Blueprint for Harappa to be a Well-Planned Indian City in the Indus Valley Background Information: You know the earliest civilizations were located near rivers; Indian civilizations in the Indus Valley were no different. The cities in the Indus Valley settled along the Indus River for agricultural purposes but are known for being well-planned. Much of what we know about the cities of the Indus Valley comes from excavations at Mohenjo-Daro. Mohenjo-Daro was one of the largest and best-known cities as well as Harappa (huh-RAP-uh). Harappa gave its name to the entire Indus River culture which was prosperous for about 800 years.
