Food for Thought Learn about… Land Secondary

Become an active Global Citizen!

Our learning objectives: To understand why land is important, and who has more control over it To identify the impact of buying large quantities of land To explore issues of fairness, power and sustainability.

If you had your own land, what would you use it for? ------------

A big issue: not enough land? Did you know that in Guatemala, 8% of the farmers own almost 80% of the land. 8% of farmers own this much land. The rest of the farmers own this much land.

A mystery… In 2009, the Tanzanian government decided to stop all land being sold for biofuel development. They wanted to investigate and review whether this was a good thing or not. Why do you think they did this? Solve the mystery! Courtesy of the University of Texas Libraries The University of Texas at Austin

What do you think? Who seems to be benefiting most from this form of investment? What long term problems are there? Who was supporting this sort of land use? Why might they be? Who are the winners and who are the losers? Why? Is a land investment of this sort fair?

Questions… Sustainability Fairness Power Think about these key ideas…

Make a change… Who had the power to decide what happened to the land? Which group with a lot of power was asking for the land? Therefore who is able to CHANGE the way land is allocated, and protect small farmers? Governments can make laws Businesses can consider the rights of land users and make ethical decisions The public can tell governments and businesses what they want

Make a change… If you have one, complete a section of your wallchart!
