4 How can I help my child prepare for school? Can he/she… Dress and undress independently? Use the toilet independently and ask to go there? Recognise their own name? Feed himself/herself? Share toys and equipment? Handle a pencil? Sing some nursery rhymes? Practise counting to 10? Listen well and follow simple instructions?

5 How can I help my child prepare for school? Varied experiences Get them used to: pencils, crayons, felt pens, chalks, paints, play dough, scissors Share stories, books and rhymes. Talk to them Model speaking and listening skills Model how to take turns in play

6 Uniform All children wear school uniform comprising; a bright red sweatshirt or cardigan white shirt or blouse (polo shirts are ideal) grey trousers or skirt grey socks for boys white socks or grey tights for girls during the summer, girls may wear red / white checked or striped dresses and boys grey shorts as an alternative Jewellery and nail varnish are not permitted. Shoes should be black and sensible – no raised heels. Velcro fastenings are ideal for the younger children. Trainers are not permitted. For Physical Education red T-shirt plain black shorts black plimsolls/trainers

9 The EYFS Curriculum In Class R children follow the Early Years Foundation Stage Framework (EYFS). This curriculum is based upon four themes and principles. The Unique Child Positive Relationships Enabling Environments Learning and Development

10 Early Learning Goals There are 3 prime areas of learning and 4 specific areas. For each of these areas your child will have an ‘Early Learning Goal’ to work towards. Prime Areas Communication and language Personal, social and emotional development Physical development Specific Areas Literacy Problem solving, numeracy and reasoning Understanding the World Expressive arts and design Characteristics of Effective Learning Playing and exploring Active learning Creating and thinking critically

11 Starting School The children will start Stone C of E Combined School on Monday 5 th September. For the first two weeks, the children will come to school for mornings only i.e. 8:50am – 12pm. During the afternoons of the first two weeks, Mrs Morrison/Mrs Hale and Miss Smith will visit each pupil in their own homes or, if you prefer, in school. If there are specific days that you are available, please let us know today. From the 3 rd week – the children will attend the full day.

12 A Typical School Day 8.40am – Gates open 8:50am – School begins (Registration) 9:00 –12:00pm Teaching and Learning 12:00 – 1:00pm Lunch 1:00pm - Registration 1:10 – 2:45pm Teaching and Learning 2:55 – 3:10pm Collective Worship 3:15pm - Home time

13 Free milk until age of 5 Free hot lunches available to all (please see separate information) Free fruit/veg available to all for snack

14 Home visits/school meetings during first two weeks (afternoons) After half term, reading books will go home Ongoing Learning Journeys throughout the school year Parent meetings in Autumn and Spring terms Any worries, door is always open. What to expect…

15 Tapestry is an online journal to record the development of each child in our setting. This system allows us to work with parents and carers to share information and record the children’s play and learning in and outside of the setting. It includes: Observations Parents can comment on new entries and even add their own Photos Evidence of children’s work, play and progress Click on your child’s journal and look through the observations Add your own comments at the bottom of the observation. 16 Read Write Inc is a comprehensive Literacy programme designed to teach children to read and write quickly It will begin straight away Training for new parents in Autumn term Reading books: Three a week from October half-term One RWI book, one story book and one library book Books will be changed regularly. Read Write Inc
