3.  ¡Avancemos 1! – Units 1 – 4  Unit 1: after-school activities, snack foods & drinks, describing people, subject pronouns & ser, saying what you like, definite & indefinite articles, noun-adjective agreement, United States  Unit 2: schedules, telling time, numbers 11-100, describing classes, expressing feelings, the verb tener, present tense of –ar verbs, the verbs estar & ir, Mexico  Unit 3: meals & foods, family, dates, numbers 200 – 1,000,000, present tense of –er & -ir verbs, possessive adjectives, comparatives, Puerto Rico  Unit 4: clothing & shopping, getting around town, restaurants, stem-changing verbs, direct objects, Spain

4.  The level 1 course emphasizes conversational and listening skills, which are developed and reinforced by student interaction with technology, cooperative learning, and cross- curricular activities. Reading and guided composition will also be a primary focus of the course. Multiculturalism will be promoted.

5. STANDARD 7.1: COMMUNICATION  All students will be able to communicate in at least one world language in addition to English. They will use language to engage in conversation, understand and interpret spoken and written language, present information, concepts, and ideas while making connections with other disciplines, and compare the language/culture studies with their own. STANDARD 7.2: CULTURE  All students will demonstrate an understanding of the perspectives of a culture through experiences with its products and practices.

6.  Interpretive: Students understand and interpret within the appropriate cultural context spoken and written communication.  Interpersonal: Students engage in direct oral or written communication.  Presentational: Students present, through oral and/or written communication, information, concepts, and ideas to an audience of listeners or readers with whom there is no immediate personal contact.
