Welcome to the 2 nd Snapdragon Class information session

Summary of support for parents so far this year. September with Ms Ransome – whole school policies Updated website Autumn term curriculum sessions Whole school maths session with Mrs Murphy Parent surveys – would like changes to be made to homework and also further information sessions Following feedback from parents we have changed the format of homework How to teach spellings and multiplication tables (each week)

Homework

METHODS USED FOR SPELLINGS AND MULTIPLICATION TABLES Torture Tables – only practising 6 – 9 times tables. Times Tables test on Friday Multiplication by rote, various games (eg Bingo) Spelling Bee word list – learn 10 – 14 words per week. Use handwriting time to practise the words. Test on Monday

Strategies used…….. ON YOUR MARKS – We expect children to have pencil cases ready on tables at the start of lessons and PE kits at school. This teaches the children the difference between getting ready for lessons and the start of lessons. SLANT provides clear expectations for children to show respect and active participation in all areas of school life. STRETCH IT – extend your answer and give further examples. FORMAT MATTERS – speak correctly. Prove it! – how can you prove your answer? COLD CALL – be ready to answer any question – don’t put your hand up.

Rewards Individual rewards – Children receive SLANT, Cold Call, On Your Marks, Format Matters certificates in the celebration assembly on a Friday. Teachers also send certificates home in the post for excellent attitudes to learning. End of term certificates are presented for good and outstanding attendance. Weekly attendance raffle for those children with 100% attendance that week. End of year awards and prizes will be given to children who have shown consistently high standards in specified areas of the curriculum and will be presented these by members of the school community.

Class rewards -This can be for exceptional effort or demonstrating Christian values. Table Points – Each table collects up points. At the end of each month, the points are counted and that particular table has a reward. Sponge Bobs – For when the children have got full marks in their spelling tests (x3); exceptional work; fantastic attitude and going over and beyond with their work. We always focus on praise, rewarding good behaviour.

Uniform We expect children to attend school wearing the correct uniform. Look on website for more information: www.woodford.northants.sch.uk/uniform www.woodford.northants.sch.uk/uniform

We follow the 2014 National curriculum Differentiation, support and challenge to enable every child to succeed. The children have a learning intention for every session and a differentiated success criteria. You may have seen this on the homework too. Must - To achieve age related expectations they must … (Challenge) Should – To secure age related expectations they should … (Super challenge) Could – To exceed age related expectations they could … (Ocean Deep challenge)

AGE RELATED EXPECTATIONS I can provide you with the end of year expectations for Year Five and Six. If you would like specific Symphony assessment information in order to support your child, then please ask.

Sparkling Start and Fantastic Finish The way we start and finish a topic. The Sparkling Start – hooks the children into their topic. Fantastic Finish – celebrates what the children have learned and achieved in their journey.

How you can help at home … Homework – Please support your child with their homework each week and work on their targets, especially multiplication tables. Reading - Please listen to your child read for 15 mins every night. Encourage children to talk about the book they have read – What happens in the beginning, middle, end? Ask questions about what they have read – Ask the children how they know by referring to the text. Make predictions of what they think may happen next. Get the children to summarise what has happened – so can they say in two sentences what they have just read. Inference – work on what is being said and done.

How you can help at home … Writing – Encouraging children to work on saying a sentence aloud, using correct punctuation, re-reading sentence to check it makes sense. Using ?, !, …, commas in a list and “ ”. Also, can you check that the work is neatly presented. Are you impressed with it? Maths – I can provide you with a Year Five and Six Calculation Strategy. Also I have copies of SATs papers that the children can practise at home. WH Smith also stock practise SATs books. *Reminder board – keep checking the reminder board. Useful websites Links on the school website and videos – please check as they will regularly be updated. * Please keep checking the class pages on the website for updates as we will be posting information regularly.

Transfer to Year 6 in September Homework is the same. Spellings and Times Table Homework are the same. Age related expectations are higher.
