Map Projections and Map Types

How do we show a round image on a flat surface? Projection: the scientific process of transferring points on the earth’s surface to a flat map All projections will distort one or more of: – Shape – Area – Distance – Direction Only degrees of latitude and longitude are correct on all maps

Maps Flat representations of the Earth. Distorted (not accurate) and designed with a specific purpose— trying to show something.

Mercator Original projection, 1600s What is accurate and what is distorted? Accurate: Direction Distorted: Shape and area near north and south poles

Interrupted Homolosine/ Goode’s Interrupted Projection What is accurate and what is distorted? Accurate: Shape and Area Distorted: Distance

Robinson What is accurate and what is distorted? Accurate: Shape and Area Distorted: North and South Poles

Winkel Tripel What is accurate and what is distorted? Accurate: Most accurate projection Distorted: Area and Shape

Types of Maps: Political Political maps use colors to show state and national boundaries. They also show capitals and major cities -- a capital city usually gets a star.

Types of Maps: Topographic/Contour Topographic or contour maps use lines/circles to show the shape and elevation of an area. Lines that are close together indicate steep land, and lines that are far apart indicate flatter land. The lines will sometimes have numbers indicating elevation. Often include political elements too.

Types of Maps: Climate Climate maps use colors/shading to provide information about the climate (average temperature and precipitation) of a region.

World Climate Map

Thematic Maps Thematic maps are designed to show a particular thing (theme) about a specific geographic area. Examples include population, religion, political beliefs, etc. There are many different types of thematic maps. It is important to look at the key/legend to understand a thematic map.

Thematic Maps Choropleth--uses shading to show a theme
