Cross Media Study Section B Questions

Aims: to identify the key themes in Section B questions to tailor a case study to address these themes.

Task Look at the list of past questions from Section B of the MEST 1 paper. Underline the key words in each question Write down these key words, making a note of where there are one or more examples of the same theme being used in a question. E.g: AUDIENCES consuming and responding X2

Section B themes AUDIENCES consuming and responding X2 ADVERTISING/SYNERGY/PROMOTION X2 REPRESENTATION of people/places/AUDIENCES ‘DUMBING DOWN’ NEW TECHNOLOGY and AUDIENCE ENGAGEMENT/ACTIVITY X3 AUDIENCE ENTERTAINMENT/IMAGINATIVE TECHNIQUES PRODUCTS PRESENT ACROSS SEVERAL PLATFORMS X2 Similarities/differences in CODES AND CONVENTIONS AUDIENCE SHAPING OUTPUT CHANGING INSTITUTIONS/INSTITUTIONAL PRESENCE ON EACH PLATFORM X2

Tasks Complete the ‘Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows’ Website treasure hunt.

Task Choose one of the texts that you want to use for your study of the e-media platform List the ways in which your text is present on this platform (e.g. Official website, Institution website, information websites, fansites, YouTube etc). Complete the website treasure hunt again, but this time for your own site. HOMEWORK: Complete the extended written task for the website you have chosen. Due in Thursday 22 nd November

Aims To understand what makes a good Section B answer To consider and understand the ways in which your case study should include examples from different media platforms.

Task Look at the exemplar Section B answer and discuss, in pairs or threes, the following questions: 1.How does the candidate cover the different media platforms? (Hint: Think about the STRUCTURE of the essay) 2.How does the candidate ensure that he/she has a range of texts? 3.How does the candidate use examples in his/her answer? 4.How does he/she use THEORY in his/her answer? 5.What ISSUES and DEBATES does the candidate use in his/her answer?

Top Tips Keep your case study BROAD and CONTRASTING (e.g. studying just one text like Skyfall over several platforms won’t quite be enough – you should choose several examples from the Film and Broadcast Fiction platform that use the paltforms contrastingly). However, the examples you do choose must be DETAILED! Completely teacher led case studies are not viewed favourably – you must ‘demonstrate individual engagement’.

Last lesson we… Looked at an exemplar 32/32 answer Identified the way in which the student STRUCTURED her answer and used EXAMPLES from CONTRASTING texts. Considered how to construct a case study in BREADTH and DETAIL. Look at two more exemplar scripts and assess them according to the mark scheme. Consider how to approach your own case study in the light of the exemplars. This lesson we will…

What to look for… How has the student structured his/her response to the question? How many texts does the student make reference to? Do they have a range of examples? How many platforms does the student make reference to? How clear is the student’s written expression (this does not mean their handwriting, but the clarity of their sentences/ideas)? Remember, you are EVALUATING the work, so look for positives and points for improvement!

Learning points: Case studies should be broad but still detailed. Aim for three per platform You should research a variety of texts on each platform Remain focused on the question throughout – don’t just describe your case study Consider the nature of each media platform and what opportunities they offer institutions and audiences. This presentation will be available on theBackwell English Zone from the end of today Backwell English Zone

Next lesson we will… Continue to research your individual case study Have individual tutorial sessions to update me on the progress you have made so far on your case study. Choose a platform (print, e-media, or broadcasting) and prepare notes on one text that you intend to include in your case study for this platform. Due: Thursday 29 th November Homework:
