3 Meet Mrs. Thoresen… 16 th year of teaching 8th year at Briarwood Went to WSU/ graduated from WWU M.A. in Education w/endorsements in Special Education and ELL Married 17 years (Al) Two boys, Jacob (9 th grade) & Jaxson (4th grader in Mr. Wood’s class) and one dog, Sophie

7 Superheroes read Good Fit Books When looking for a good-fit book, 2 nd graders find a book, read 2 or 3 pages and then ask themselves these three questions… Am I interested?? Do I know the words? Do I understand what I’m reading

8 What does a Super Reader Look like? Staying in one Spot Finding a spot with no distractions Reading the WHOLE time Whisper Read/Read in your Head Keep eyes on your book

9 We LOVE Math… Math Workshop Four days a week Teacher works with small groups/one on one on concepts based on standards and the needs of students Flexible groups (novice-apprentice) formed using formal/informal assessments and need based on our common core standards Our class has been asked to field test 3 new Common Core aligned curriculums for the new math adoption in the 2016-2017 school year. The three curriculums are… My Math Math Expressions Eureka Math Each curriculum will be tested for a 3 week period

10 Daily rotations may include… *Hands on manipulatives or games (partner or small group) *Work on my own *Teacher time *Practice math facts through technology *Common Core Standards/Everyday Math curriculum drive our small group instruction! We LOVE Math… Math Workshop

16 Conferences Student-led Conferences will be held on… Wednesday, December 2 nd and Thursday, December 3 rd. More info to come on how/when to schedule your child’s conference!

18 Assessments in 2 nd grade… Stanford Testing- End of January CogAT- 1 st or 2 nd week of March Fountas & Pinnell (reading)- (Fall/Winter/Spring)

19 Volunteers … Please fill out the online survey for days/frequency, etc. I would like to start the 1 st full week of October. Mrs. Threlkeld (librarian) is also looking for volunteers! Please let me know if you’d be interested in helping during library. Volunteer Survey

20 Mystery Reader… One of the BEST ways to volunteer… Surprise your child and read his/her favorite book/s to the class Anyone can do it… Grandma, Grandpa, Mom, Dad, etc. Great way to get to know your child’s class! Birthday???? If interested, please sign up tonight or email the teachers to set up a date and time!
