3 All About Mrs.Thoresen 14 th year of teaching 6th year at Briarwood Went to WSU /graduated from WWU Masters degree in Education with endorsements in Special Ed. and ELL Married 15 years Two children, Jacob (7 th grader at Maywood) & Jaxson (2 nd grader in Mrs. Dean’s class) I Love to support all my kids in activities they do out of school

4 All About Mrs. Cook 6 th year of teaching 3rd year at Briarwood I have a Bachelor’s degree from Central Washington University, with a major in Elementary Education and a minor in Reading. Masters degree in Education Married 3 years (Sean) Grew up in the Briarwood community I am really excited to be a part of your child’s life and I look forward to getting to know all of you this year!

7 The Daily 5 Tasks Creating Independent Learners Read to Self The best way to become a better reader is to practice each day with “Good Fit” books that you have selected yourself. It’s fun! Work on Writing Just like reading the best way to become a better writer is to write each day. It’s fun! Read to Someone Partner reading provides opportunities to practice strategies, improve fluency, check for understanding, and hear your own voice while sharing in the learning community.

8 The Daily 5 Tasks (Cont’d) Word Work Expanded vocabulary leads to greater fluency in reading, therefore increasing comprehension. Becoming more proficient as a speller leads to writing fluency and the ability to get your ideas down on paper. Listen to Reading Just hearing fluent and expressive reading of good literature expands your vocabulary; helps build your stamina and will make you a better reader.

18 Homework Weekly homework calendars go home in Monday’s H.E.R.O folder Homework is sent home daily. (Home links or other math practice activity) Homework and folder are due the next morning along with the blue weekly calendar. Homework reinforces and reviews skills, teaches study habits and responsibility. Please check over that your child has completed the homework correctly and initial the homework calendar Students are also expected to read or be read to at least 15 min/night. Record minutes on the calendar in front of homework folder (RAH minutes will need to be recorded online).

19 Parent/Teacher Conferences Conferences will be held on December 4 th and December 5 th (Wed. and Thurs.) Please fill out the conference request form and leave on your child’s desk or return at your convenience! Please indicate if there is an older/younger sibling to coordinate times with.

20 Report Cards Report cards are sent home three times a year: November 27, 2013 March 14, 2014 June 18, 2014 *Report cards and classroom work are based on 4-3-2-1 scale.

22 Mystery Reader One of the most fun ways to volunteer… Surprise your child Read his/her favorite book/s to the class Anyone can do it… Grandma, Grandpa, Mom, Dad, etc. Great way to get to know your child’s class! Birthday???? If interested, please sign up tonight!
