The Human Body Systems By the Fourth Grade Computer Class

Organelles  Cells  Tissues  Organs  Organ systems  Organism Example: Digestive System

The Human Body Systems Work Together The Digestive System The Circulatory System Excretory System The Respiratory System The Nervous System The Muscular/Skeletal System

The Digestive System Function: Break down food particles to extract nutrients and energy Pathway: Mouth  Esophagus  Stomach  Small Intestine  Large Intestine  Rectum  Anus Digestive Enzymes: -Lipases -Amylases

Circulatory System Function: Pumps blood throughout the body to carry oxygen and nutrients to body cells (picks up cellular waste to be transported to lungs for excretion)

Excretory System Function: eliminate toxins and waste from the body Organs: kidneys, liver, lungs, skin Function of the Kidneys: Filter waste from blood to produce urine Function of the Liver: creates bile which helps break down fats to be eliminated in feces

Function of the Respiratory System Function: supply the blood with oxygen in order for the blood to deliver oxygen to all parts of the body. Pathway: Nose/Mouth  trachea  bronchi  lungs

The Nervous System The main parts of the Nervous System are the Brain, the Nerves (made up of neuron cells), and the Spinal Cord.

The Nervous System Function Brain: the control center of the human body; makes us think, see, hear, feel, taste Spinal cord: is the main pathway for information connecting the brain to the rest of the body

Muscular System Function: Muscles contract and work with the bones of the skeletal system to produce movement Types: Cardiac- muscle that makes your heart pump Skeletal – muscles attached to bones to produce movement Smooth- muscles of your internal organs that move food and blood

Skeletal Systems: Functions Protects our vital organs such as the brain, the heart, and the lungs. Gives us the shape that we have. Without it, we would just be a blob of blood and tissue on the floor. Allows us to move. Because our muscles are attached to our bones, when our muscles move, they move the bones, and we move.

Ligaments & Tendons Ligaments: attach bones to other bones Tendons: attach bones to muscles (example: Achilles Tendon)

The Organ Systems help maintain homeostasis in the body HOMEOSTASIS= the process where organisms maintain a stable internal environment Examples: Integumentary and Circulatory system regulate body temp (thermoregulation) Nervous System controls functioning of other body systems- turn on and off as needed Excretory System- kidneys maintain pH and filter toxins out of body

Homeostasis in Plants Structure of the leaf: Waxy cuticle to prevent water loss Stomata (stoma) on bottom surface of leave only to prevent water loss
