This is Rome. It is the capital city of Italy. The round building is called the Colosseum.

Climate in Italy The north and south of Italy have varied climates. The coastal regions have a Mediterranean climate with mild winters and hot, dry summers. The western side of the country has more rain. The eastern side is windier. Summers are warm in all areas but the temperatures can differ greatly between north and south in winter. The north and the Alps are very cold in winter with temperatures between -3 and -7. The Amalfi Coast in summer. Venice in winter time.

Famous landmarks in Rome. This is the ‘Trevi Fountain’. It is the most famous fountain in history. This is the Colosseum. It is the most famous landmark in Rome. Gladiator fighting took place here.

This is Venice which is known as ‘The City of Water’. It has over 150 canals. The gondola rides here are popular with tourists.

This is the ‘Leaning Tower of Pisa’ which is a bell tower in the city of Pisa. It was not supposed to lean at all but was built on soft ground which meant it began to slowly tilt sideways.

The Vatican is a famous place in Rome because the Pope lives and works here.

Inside the Vatican is the Sistine Chapel. It is famous for its paintings. The ceilings were painted by Michelangelo.

Mount Vesuvius and Pompeii Mt Vesuvius is the only active volcano in mainland Europe. It is most famous for it’s eruption that destroyed Pompeii.

Sport in Italy Italians have a great interest in sport. They enjoy many of the sports that we play. Italians have an interest in cycling. Many well known cycling events take place in Italy such as Giro d’Italia and Tour de France.

Italy is well known for football. It is the most popular sport in the country. The national Italian football team won the FIFA World Cup 4 times. (1934, 1938, 1982 and 2006.)

Skiing is another sport which is appreciated in Italy. Alpine skiing and cross- country skiing are the most popular types of skiing.

Carnival Carnevale is a festival or carnival which is celebrated in Italy each year 40 days before Easter. This is part of their culture and tradition. Venice is the best city for traditional masks. The Italian opera or theatre was also well known for wearing masks. It is celebrated through parades, wearing masks at masquerade balls, music and other entertainment.

Food in Italy Italy is probably known the best for its amazing food. Italian food is famous throughout the world. Pizza Cheese Garlic bread Pasta Lasagne Spaghetti

Italy also has many vineyards where they grow grapes. These grapes can then be used to make wine.

Italy has many olive groves where they grow olives. They use the olives to eat or to make olive oil.
