Exemption Recognizes that athletic trainers perform functions similar to those of other licensed professions allows them to practice athletic training despite the fact that they do not comply with the practice acts of other regulated professions.

Registration Before an individual can practice athletic training, he or she must register in that state. Pay a fee for being placed on an existing list of practitioners Does NOT assess competency Does NOT stop those not registered from practicing as ATCs.

Certification Restricts the performance of athletic training functions to only those individuals who are state certified (not necessarily those who have passed the NATA BOC exam) –In other words you can call yourself an Athletic Trainer, but until you are recognized by the state you are not allowed to ACT as an ATC.

Licensure Limits the practice of athletic training to those who have met the minimal requirements established by a state licensing board. –Passed Certification, up to date on Continuing Ed, etc Limits the practice of an athletic trainer to specific areas mentioned in the state’s practice act. (says what an ATC can and can’t do) –Can do evaluations, return to play clearance, etc –Can’t start IVs, do surgery, etc
