FACTS AND FIGURES CANADA
3
General facts Today Canada is made up of ten provinces and three terriories. Nunavut is the newest territory which was created in 1999. The total area of Canada is 9,984,670 sq km, which makes it the second largest country in the world, after Russia. The Czech republic is 125 times smaller! Canada borders the Atlantic, Pacific and Arctic oceans, the USA and Greenland (Denmark). A large percentage of Canadians live along the Canada–US border.

People and languages Canada is originally the Iroquois indian word „kanata“ which means „village, settlement“. There are 35 million inhabitants. They belong to two main groups, divided by origin: the biggest group is represented by those who have British origin (28%) followed by those with French origin (23%). Less than 4% of the population is aboriginal (Native American, Inuit or Metis, i.e.white and Native American). The two official languages are English and French.

Symbols The national flag, red and white with a centred maple leaf, was adopted officially in 1965. DJAMESON1983. Canadian_Flag. In: Wikipedia: the free encyclopedia [online]. The motto is A MARI USQUE AD MARE (From sea to sea) – Psalm 72:8

History Peoples migrating from Asia entered North America through the Bering Strait during the last ice age (about 30,000 to 15,000 years ago). Their descendants are the Inuits and the Native Americans or First Nations. About half of these live on reservations. Many of them died during the European colonization from diseases carried by the settlers. The Vikings settled for a short time in Newfoundland in 1000 AD. In the end of the XV century, European explorers were looking for a North-West Passage by sea from Europe to Asia. The voyage of John Cabot to Newfoundland in 1497, an Italian in English service, began further exploration and laid the basis for English claims to Canada.

History -continue In 1534 Jacques Cartier explored the area of the Gulf of St. Lawrence and took possession of it in the name of the French Crown. The French later established the cities of Quebec and Montreal. The French-Indian war began in 1754 and New France fell to England in 1759. In 1763 the Treaty of Paris ended seven years of fighting between France and England and Canada became an English colony. Canada was a British colony until Confederation in 1867, when the Dominion of Canada was born. In 1896 gold was discovered in western Yukon. This caused the start of a gold rush in the Klondike Valley.
9
Government The Canadian government is a constitutonal monarchy, in practice a parliamentary democracy, modelled directly on the British parliamentary system. There are two chambers: the House of Commons and the Senate. The British monarch, now Queen Elizabeth II, is still the official head of state. She is represented by the Governor General. In 1982 the first ever Canadian constitution was passed. This document enabled full political independence for Canada from Britain.
10
Economy The Canadian economy is mainly based on the service industry. Canada is also a major exporter of energy. The most important resources are the large oil and gas resources centred in Alberta and the Northern Territories. For many years the most important export items of the country have been products derived from trees in Canadian forests. Furthermore, Canada is the world's second largest exporter of wheat and other grains.
11
Geographical features and places of interest – The East The capital is Ottawa (about 1 million people), which lies in Ontario. The three other largest cities are Toronto (5.5 million people), Montreal (4 million people), and Vancouver (2.5 million people). The four provinces on the Atlantic are Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island (the smallest of the Canadian provinces), and New Brunswick. There is still rich Scottish and Irish heritage in these provinces, which can be clearly seen in the annual summer bagpipe/fiddle festivals and competitions.
12
Quebec and Ontario Quebec is the country’s biggest province by area, and is officially Canada’s only French ‑ speaking province. Many visitors say that Quebec City and Montreal are the most “European- feeling” cities in Canada. There have been political movements in Quebec over the past 50 years trying to separate the province from the rest of Canada, but until now they have been unsuccessful. Ontario is the original British province. Ontario has two sides. Southern Ontario has the highest concentration of urban population in the entire country with the biggest Canadian city, Toronto; elsewhere the rest of this rather large province is mainly agricultural and wilderness. In the very south of Ontario, on the border with New York state, you can visit one of the wonders of the world, Niagara Falls, which is a major producer of hydro-electricity for the country. Here we also find the Great Lakes, which Canada shares with the USA (exept Lake Michigan).
13
The prairies and Alberta The three prairie provinces lying west of Ontario are Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta. These provinces produce most of the wheat and other grains in Canada, thanks to the flat surface and rich soil there. Alberta is where the prairies end and the Rocky Mountains begin. Alberta, as well as having favourable farming conditions, is also rich in oil deposits (which is why Edmonton’s NHL team is called the “Oilers”). Calgary, Alberta, was home to the 1988 Winter Olympic games, and is just a few hours away from beautiful Banff, a popular tourist destination in the Rocky Mountains. Alberta is also well ‑ known in the paleontology world for its deposits of dinosaur fossils.
14
British Columbia and the North British Columbia is the westernmost province in Canada, sitting on the Pacific coast. It is physically divided from the rest of Canada by the great Rocky Mountains. Its largest city, Vancouver, was home to the 2010 Winter Olympic games. The three territories that occupy the north of Canada are the least inhabited areas. The Yukon Territory, Northwest Territories, and Nunavut, consist mainly of ice and tundra. The permafrost on the ground makes agriculture, building, and development nearly impossible. Yet it is an ideal environment for whales, wolves and dogsledding races. The largest city in all of the territories is Whitehorse, Yukon, with a population of 21,000 people.
15
Sport Canadian national sports are ice-hockey and lacrosse, an original Native American game. Other favourite sports include swimming, skiing (both cross-country and downhill), figure skating, baseball, tennis, basketball, golf and curling. The first official ice-hockey match was played in Montreal in 1879 by the students of the McGill University. In 1892 Lord Stanley, the then Governor General, gave the cup, beginning the famous tradition. In Toronto there is the Hockey Hall of Fame, the biggest museum of hockey in the world.
16
Holidays Canada's national holiday is July 1st, known as Canada Day. It marks the founding of the Dominion of Canada in 1867 and is celebrated with fireworks, barbecues and parades. Victoria Day is the celebration of Queen Victoria’s birthday and takes place on the Monday before May 24th.
17
Modern Culture Popular Canadian singers and musicians are Leonard Cohen, Neil Young, Brian Adams, Joni Mitchell, Celine Dion, Avril Lavigne, Alanis Morissette and Justin Bieber. Famous Canadian actors are Jim Carrey, Michael J. Fox, Ryan Gosling, Leslie Nielsen and Donald Sutherland. The most translated Canadian author in the Czech Republic is Margaret Atwood (The Blind Assassin); Michael Ondaatje (The English Patient ) and the critic Northrop Fry (Anatomy of Criticism) are also well- known. The Cirque du Soleil and their incredible shows are very famous all over the world, too.
