Final half of the semester Putting theory into practice 1

Design project Emphasis on lighting and energy use Custom luminaire design Design board Supporting materials

and the project is… BP Environmental Education Center Existing conditions: One-story steel-framed former car dealership in Watertwon, MA, circa 1980. Floor to ceiling glass curtain wall. concrete slab floor, and open-web steel joists with metal decking above. Unspectacular views. See SketchUp and Revit models Client philosophy: BP Environmental is an energy company focused on developing and implementing sustainable collection, distribution and sensible use of power of all sorts. The company sees itself as an integral part of the effort to find a way for humanity to live in equibrium with the global ecosystem. Project Brief: The project consists of a series of offices and a small education center. The client would like to use the design of the facility itself to demonstrate to positive effect of sustainable design strategies, technologies and materials.

ProgramSFComments Reception/waiting area400 Highlight of entry area; bold design of front desk; seating for 8 visitors and one staff member at a reception desk. Opportunity for signage and dramatic effect Education center800 For teaching about energy production and sustainability. Three 100" plasma screens for presentations; 3' wide by 8' tall solar hot- water heater (functioning - so they need a window); 20 linear feet of display cases; ability to bring out chairs (need storage) Director's office1001 desk with shelving and files; seating for 4 with table Open office area1200 Use office systems furniture or desks. Opportunity for daylighting if controlled properly. Conference room200 Seating for 20 around a single table - may be the same as you developped in previous assignment Toilets400 4 female toilets, 2 male (can be one urinal); near reception and education area Mechanical and control room 100 Can be visible, using windows, if you want to show off energy efficient systems and control. Boiler, electrical controls, computer access, fresh air fans Circulation80025%, approximately 4000

Final Requirements Board: Title Concept Clearly labeled bubble diagram OR block diagram (indicated NSEW) Floor plan – clearly labeled, with materials RCP with key Two wall sections clearly indicating soffits and lighting configuration Rendered lighting study grid of open office area Renderings of four different spaces, emphasizing the lighting designs used Custom luminaire: plan, elevation(s), and section Background information: Lighting Equipment Schedule Product cut sheets from at least five luminaires Switching plan

graphic standards change at different points in the design process

Design RCPS vs. Construction Documents graphics Design RCPS: –Lighting strategy (uplighting, downlighting, whatever) –Ceiling materials and soffit heights –Key to fixtures and materials CD RCPs –Precise ceiling grids, labels, mechanical system, sprinklers, exit signs –Dimensions for soffits and fixture locations –Switching

Chapter 23 Final Phases © 2006 Fairchild Publications, Inc. 29 Sections and Elevations Vertical location of wall luminaires, switches, outlets, windows, and doors Sectional views helpful: –Analyzing light distribution patterns –Location of floor-mounted luminaires –Mechanical or electrical elements in ceiling cavities

Chapter 23 Final Phases © 2006 Fairchild Publications, Inc. 30 “Lighting Plans” Dimensions Measurements from center (o.c.) of a luminaire to a fixed architectural element Mounting heights –From A.F.F. to center of fixture –Distance for suspended fixtures is from A.F.F. to bottom of luminaire
