Lesson 3 Identifying Equipment Used to Maintain Good Animal Health Reminder: student learning activities are at the end of this power point.

Next Generation Science/Common Core Standards Addressed! WHST.9 ‐ 12.9 Draw evidence from informational texts to support analysis, reflection, and research. (HS ‐ LS1 ‐ 1)

Agriculture, Food, and Natural Resource Standards Addressed! AS.07.01. Design programs to prevent animal diseases, parasites and other disorders and ensure animal welfare. –AS.07.01.01.a. Identify and summarize specific tools and technology used in animal health management. –AS.07.01.02.a. Explain methods of determining animal health and disorders.

Work!  Describe equipment necessary to keep animals healthy.  Identify equipment necessary to keep animals groomed.  List disinfectants used to keep animals healthy.

Interest Approach Compare this classroom to necessary animal facilities. Discuss temperature, space, availability of water, and medical attention and any other comparison.

Objective 1: Describe equipment necessary to keep animals healthy.

What basic equipment will I need to keep animals healthy? I. Diseases and parasites can be very costly to an animal business. Losses can include abortions, reduction in growth, unnecessary medicines, and having to buy feed additives. Here are some things you need to have to prevent sick animals and treat them if they do get infected.

A.Water and watering tanks and troughs are important because animals can’t live without water. Water should be as fresh and clean as possible. What basic equipment will I need to keep animals healthy?

Keep troughs full and free from debris. Clean the water tank to keep stock from getting sick so the disease cannot spread through the sharing of water. Be careful to check your animals if they are watered from a pond, river, or other flowing water. What basic equipment will I need to keep animals healthy?

They may acquire diseases that are living in the water. You may want to take a water sample to have it tested for contaminants. What basic equipment will I need to keep animals healthy?

C. Space is necessary for animals to do well. Do not overcrowd animals because contagious diseases will spread faster and it will be more difficult to watch all animals closely. What basic equipment will I need to keep animals healthy?

Since different animals have different space requirements, check to see what your animal needs. You may need fences, cages, buildings, and other materials to help you create enough space for your animals. What basic equipment will I need to keep animals healthy?

II. In order to maintain animal health, proper grooming must be done to all animals. What equipment will I need to keep my animals groomed?

If given the opportunity, all animals would prefer a clean environment. In nature, animals are able to clean themselves with rain, rolling around in dirt, and other means. What equipment will I need to keep animals groomed?

In captivity animals don’t always have access to these amenities. What equipment will I need to keep animals groomed?

They rely on their owner to keep them groomed. Grooming entails caring for skin and hair, feet and hooves, and other areas of the animals. What equipment will I need to keep animals groomed?

A. If kept clean, an animals skin and coat is less likely to be invaded by parasitic diseases. In most cases, a currycomb or brush is a necessary tool. What equipment will I need to keep animals groomed?

A currycomb is a rubber or metal brush with teeth for cleaning debris off of animals. Never bathe any animal too often as it will take away natural oils. Keep hair trimmed to avoid buildup of feces on some animals. What equipment will I need to keep animals groomed?

B. To tend to animals feet or hooves, a hoof pick will be needed. You will also need to trim hooves of some animals and clip nails of others. Debris and feces can accumulate on the feet and can be dangerous to the animals health. What equipment will I need to keep animals groomed?

C. Other areas that need to be kept clean include ears and genitals of animals. What equipment will I need to keep animals groomed?

Objective 3: List disinfectants used to keep animals healthy.

What disinfectants will I need to keep animals healthy? III. Confinement operations must constantly make sure their facilities are disinfected so diseases cannot flourish and harm the animals.

A.The first thing to do when disinfecting is to make sure all surfaces are free from materials like dirt and manure. What disinfectants will I need to keep animals healthy?

You can remove organic matter with a pressure washer, hand held brush, or anything else that accomplishes the purpose. What disinfectants will I need to keep animals healthy?

Detergents can also be used. Detergent is material that removes dirt faster by breaking down the material and increasing the wetting speed. What disinfectants will I need to keep animals healthy?

B. Phenol coefficient is the killing strength of a product compared to phenol. Phenol is a disinfectant otherwise called carbolic acid. Try to use products with equal or greater killing strength for best results. What disinfectants will I need to keep animals healthy?

C. Whatever type of disinfectant you choose, be sure to consider the following: 1. Price 2. Odors 3. If it will burn or cause harm to your animals 4. Non-poisonous when inhaled 5. Effectiveness after being diluted 6. What temperatures it is effective at 7. Obtainable and transportable What disinfectants will I need to keep animals healthy?

D. Specific equipment needed to disinfect includes: disinfectant, any necessary clothing to ensure skin and lung safety, water, a brush, or pressure washer, and any other equipment that the label may call for. E. Various cleaners include cresol, pine oil, iodine, chlorine, copper sulfate, and others. Always be sure to determine if the product will kill the disease or parasite you need it to before making the investment. What disinfectants will I need to keep animals healthy?

F. Non-chemical disinfectants can also be used and include sunlight, heat, time, electricity, antibodies and sedimentation. What disinfectants will I need to keep animals healthy?
