Warm-Up: On one side of the provided Index Card, answer each of the following questions:  What is your favorite sport to watch (TV or live)?  What is your favorite sport to play?  What grade do you hope to achieve in the class and what are you going to do to get it? Write your first and last name in the top right corner of your index card.

Agenda Attendance Welcome Expectations About Me Rules & Procedures Pre-Test (don’t panic)

Welcome to Integrated Science! What is Integrated Science?  This is a brand new science class that applies principles from several scientific specialties to a central theme, or topic.  We will primarily look at physics, chemistry and biology as they apply to human movement.  Another term for human movement is biomechanics.

Expectations for this Class This is not a class where presence alone will get you a passing grade. It is a class where effort and hard work will be rewarded. I expect each one of you to come to class ready to work and learn. I expect you to take notes and participate in class discussions.

Expectations for the Class 60% of your grade will come from homework assignments, labs, research papers, and other in- class activities. 40% of your grade will be quizzes/tests.  You can expect a bi-weekly quiz on material covered in notes over that 2 week time frame

Absences If you miss a lab, your make-up assignment will be a research paper due within 2 class periods after you return. Other work will be posted on my website (http://skstanton.weebly.com).http://skstanton.weebly.com  I expect you to get the assignment(s) you missed from the website and turn it in within 2 class periods.  If, for any reason, you cannot access my website, then grab a hard copy from my absent box.

About Me Two truths and a lie  On the next slide are three statements.  I will ask you which one you believe to be false.

Two Truths & a Lie A. I have lived in another country for a year. B. I have conducted research for Major League Baseball. C. I have been published in a research journal.

About Me I grew up in Nashville, TN. I have lived in TN, TX, MA, MN, and now ID. I have attended 4 different colleges:  Baylor University (Waco, TX)  Boston University (Boston, MA)  Boise State University (Boise, ID)  Northwest Nazarene University (Nampa, ID)

About Me My undergraduate degree is in Biomedical Engineering. My senior thesis was funded by Major League Baseball.  I worked at BIDMC in their Orthopedic Biomechanics Laboratory. (Across the street from Fenway Park! Go Red Sox!)  We studied SLAP lesions in MLB pitchers.

Ice Breaker You are going to write your own 2 truths and a lie. In groups of 4 (I will assign, so don’t worry about finding a group), you will each take turns sharing your statements and guessing which is the lie. Please keep your statements appropriate and fun. Stay in your groups when you are done.

Classroom Rules & Procedures

Instructions I am going to read each of my rules. I want you to individually reflect on each rule. Start to think about why this rule was chosen.  There are only 4, so why are these the most important ones to me? Share your reasons with your group. Based on what was shared, come up with a single rationale for the rule that best represents what each group member said.

Classroom Rules Don’t talk while someone else is talking. Do not make fun of another student’s ideas. Be in your seat with paper and writing utensil on your desk. Cell phones are to be off and stowed away in your backpack, locker, or purse.

Classroom Rules: My Reasons for the Rule Don’t talk while someone else is talking. It is disrespectful to speak while someone else is talking. It also prevents those around you from hearing critical information. Do not make fun of another student’s ideas. We will have daily class discussions and it is important that all students feel comfortable sharing their ideas. Be in your seat with paper and writing utensil on your desk. Students will be expected to begin working as soon as the bell rings. If you are not in your seat with your notebook on your desk when the bell rings, you will be marked tardy. Cell phones are to be off and stowed away in your backpack, locker, or purse. You will be informed if you can access your cell phone for educational purposes.

Classroom Procedures Pencil Sharpener: back corner of the room by the storage door. Food & Drink: You may eat in the class as long as your food is not distracting to those around you. You may bring drinks in, BUT if there is one spill, you can only have water for the rest of the semester. My Desk: Please do not go behind my desk.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kNepR8njvT8 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kNepR8njvT8

Turning in Work All homework is due at the start of class. If you do not have your assignment for whatever reason, fill out a Yellow Sheet.  You must turn in a sheet of paper with your name on it.  I will check you off for having either your assignment or the Yellow Sheet.  Once you have been checked off, you may turn your assignment in. All work is turned into your Inbox. DO NOT give your assignment to me or place it on my desk. Even if it is late, it goes in the Inbox.

Late Work You will lose 10% (a full letter grade) for each class period it is late for a maximum of 30% reduction. After 3 class periods, your maximum score is a 70%. All work must be submitted by the end of the quarter.

Absent Work It is YOUR responsibility to check my website for what you missed.  Go through the notes and complete any assignments.  You have 2 class periods to turn it in before it is considered late.  Please fill out a Absent Form and staple it to your assignment. Hard copies are also available in the absent bin.

Corrections You may correct any assignment that is not an Exam for full points back. Your grade in this class is completely based on how hard you are willing to work. The more effort you put in, the higher your grade will be.

Pre-Test You will have 25 minutes to complete your Pre-Test. Do the best you can on this exam, if you do not know the answer, please SKIP it. The purpose of this is for me to learn what concepts you know from biology, chemistry and physics and what concepts I need to spend the most time on.

Exit Ticket On the back of your Index Card, answer the following questions:  What are you most looking forward to in this class?  What about this class are you nervous or uncertain about?
