The Object of the Game Is to score more points than the opposition Teams can score points in four ways, but what are their values? Try 4 points Goal 2 points Penalty Goal Drop Goal 1 point

3 How can a Try be Scored? In groups name the five ways a try can be scored Player grounds the ball Penalty try Sliding try Simultaneous grounding by an attacker and defender Play affected by the Referee, TJ or a Spectator

What are the Referees duties at a try? Look at both touch judges Talk to Touch judges if they wish to give input Be in the best position Observe the grounding of the ball Look confident Award the try with a clear signal The referee is the sole judge when awarding a try

What are the Touch Judges duties at a try? Be in the best position Observe the grounding of the ball Look confident Be clear if standing off the flag, standing on the flag or running through If giving a report to the referee be concise What have you seen Where it took place Does the referee need any players numbers

9 Points of Play A player in trying to score a try is held up on the 3rd tackle in-goal, what is your decision as the referee? 4th tackle, 10metres from the try line. A player places the ball against the post in the field of play and claims a try, what is your decision as the referee? No try, play on An attacking player grounds the ball in the oppositions in-goal and a tackling player is touching the dead ball line, decision? Try An attacking player dives for the line but because of defenders trying to tackle the player you don’t see the ball grounded, decision?

10 Points of Play A player in trying to score a try is held up on the 5th tackle in-goal, what is your decision? Handover, 10metres from the try line. While trying to score a try a player drops the ball in-goal, but the referee misses it, as a touch judge what do you do? Stand off the flag and report it to the referee As a touch judge you don’t see the grounding of the ball but you’re happy with everything else, what do you do? Stand on the flag When certain to score a player has the ball stolen at the last minute, what is you decision? Penalty Try, awarded between the posts

11 Summary A try can be scored by placing the ball on the try line or in the in-goal area The try scorer must not touch any part or the flag or in-goal lines before or during a try Always be in the best position As a referee acknowledge your touch judges Be clear and confident when awarding a try.
