APPLESEED TO ZEUS and Everyone In Between Theme: Fabulous Folktales! North Dakota Reading Association Young Writers’ Project 2016-2017

Grades K-1 My Folktale Character Adventure All over the world, children are first introduced to literature when a family member tells them a bed time story. Students will choose a folktale character (examples: Three Little Pigs, Three Billy Goats Gruff and The Gingerbread Man) and write about an imagined adventure they have together.

Students will write a narrative piece about a character from a favorite folktale. Write about why you liked the character (person, animal, troll, etc.) with a minimum of one sentence. Write about what you and this character would do if you went on an adventure (go four-wheeling, swimming, or fishing, etc.). Use an illustration to enhance the text. The writing may be in the student’s own handwriting or written digitally. The overall content, the thoughts of the writer and the artwork will be judged. Refer to ND Language Arts Standard W.3 (Narrative) When we’re done here we can go play dress up and have a tea party! And, I hate to tell you but you a Mani/Pedi!

Grades 2 and 3 Fable Sequels This project is designed to have students predict what might happen after the traditional ending of the story. Students will choose their favorite fable and write a sequel which might occur after the conclusion of the fable. Let’s do lunch! Winner buys! I wonder if this guy is doing the 5K next week?

Students will read several different fables prior to project and become familiar with this reading genre. Think about what might happen next. Example: The Crow and the Pitcher…..once the crow figures out how to get the water out of the pitcher, does he drink it all or does he share it with someone else? Maybe he waters his garden with the extra water or fills his bird bath. Include a brief summary of the fable and then include what might happen next. Descriptive language, voice and sequencing of events is important. Use an Illustration to enhance the writing. Writing components and illustration will be considered in the judging. The text may be hand written or typed. Refer to ND Language Arts Standard W.3(Narrative) Rl.2(recount stories)

Grades 4 and 5 Tall Tales Meet POKEMON GO! What if Paul Bunyan was playing POKEMON GO? What would happen? Where would he go? Research several tall tales and chose a character (Examples: Paul Bunyan, Johnny Appleseed, Keelboat Annie). Write a short story from the viewpoint of that character while he plays POKEMON GO! Include famous places he would go to, and how he would use his exaggerated abilities to get the POKEMON.

Students will research several different Tall Tales and choose a character from one of the Tall Tales. The students will imagine that their chosen character is playing POKEMON GO! This is the time to let your imagination take the reader on an exciting search. The narrative needs to include different locations and take in account how he is getting from one place to the next. How the character uses his special ability must be included. Use a clear and clever voice throughout the writing. Point of view can be from the character’s perspective or use of a narrator. Descriptive language and word choice are important,as well as artwork to enhance the adventure. Refer to ND Language Arts Standard W.3 (Narrative)

Grades 6,7,8 A Day in the Life of a Mythological Character Think of one day…..the ENTIRE day……what exactly would Hercules do in one day? What problems would he encounter and how would he solve them? Does he stop for lunch or go to school? You get the idea! Research several Mythological characters and create a series of diary style entries to let the reader know where he/she has been, what mishaps have they faced and overcome, and who he/she has encountered along the way.

Students will research several Mythological characters. The writer then needs to imagine what that character may have done during the course of one day and write a series of diary entries showcasing those events. Items that need to be included are: encountering a problem and how it was solved, at least one other character (people, mythological characters, animal), and natural events that would occur in a day. Descriptive language is very important as it will direct the reader’s imagination down the path the character took, as if the diary were found and read at a later date. The writing needs to be in the voice of the character. Refer to ND Language Arts Standards W.3 (Narrative) and Social Studies 6.2.9

Grades 9-12 Original Folktale Students will read and research Pourquoi Tales from all over the world. These folktales tell a story of why something in our world is the way it is, such as why the snake has no legs. These tales focus on animals and the natural world. After understanding these types of folktales, students will write a tale of their own.

Students will write an original folktale in the style of Pourquoi tales where events of nature are explained to children. The narrative must be submitted in a written form for the judges to read, but is also accompanied by a digital recording of the story. Creative thinking, standard writing conventions and personality during the recording will be the basis for judging. Any artwork provided will certainly enhance the story. Refer to ND Language Arts Standard 3 and Language Arts Speaking Standards.
