The EMPOWER project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement no 636249 The EMPOWER project and Disciplinary Integration Prof. Susan Grant-Muller s.m.grant-muller@its.leeds.ac.uk

The EMPOWER project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement no 636249 MG-5.1-2014 Topic: Transforming the use of conventionally fuelled vehicles in urban areas 2 Transport, energy, emissions, health, access, liveable cities

The EMPOWER project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement no 636249 Transport system: connected infra, people, entities

The EMPOWER project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement no 636249 EMPOWER Concept Smarter transport choices Mode Time share Stay adapt 4 Reduced use of CFV: Carbon and energy benefits Positive incentives through technology

The EMPOWER project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement no 636249 Positive Incentives 5

The EMPOWER project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement no 636249 Living Labs, Take-Ups, Followers 6

The EMPOWER project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement no 636249 Key Objectives and KPI ‘To substantially reduce the use of conventionally fuelled vehicles in cities by fundamentally changing the mobility behaviour of their drivers and users, using positive incentives and new mobility services’ 7  A 15%-50% reduction in the use of conventionally fuelled vehicles (measured by reductions in Vehicle Kilometers travelled by Conventionally Fuelled Vehicles)  30% increase in travellers' self-reported positive evaluation of urban accessibility and attractiveness (measured through feedback mechanisms including social media and questionnaires, disaggregated to establish impact on vulnerable groups and gendered effects)  75% Customer/user satisfaction with the EMPOWER mobility service (measured through feedback mechanisms including social media and questionnaires, disaggregated to ensure representation of vulnerable travel groups and gender)  10% response rate from Vulnerable groups on user satisfaction

The EMPOWER project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement no 636249 ‘we want an app that is 100% perfect and low hassle’ ‘ we need to understand mode shift and system consequences ’ ‘ software development needs a detailed brief’ ‘we need elasticities to design incentives’ ‘ the research questions need a rigorous research framework’ ‘we need to understand the psychology behind choice’ ‘we need specific data for energy modelling ’ ‘we need low risk trials with high leverage outcomes’ ‘we need sustainable business models for incentive supply’

The EMPOWER project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement no 636249 Multidisciplinary integration challengeResearch management Project Research Task specificity – ICT vs social scienceYes Attitudes towards technical risk and uncertainty Yes Maturity for dissemination and valued destinations – where is the state of the art? Yes Accuracy, precision and rigourYes Links with legacy paradigms and status quoYes ‘Bottom up’ rich - but challenging with disparate authorities Yes Facilitation vs directionalYes Culture on formality and rigour of textual reporting Yes Frameworks for research methodsYes Culture and skills concerning team working, IPR and co-creation Yes Skills and expertise in interfacing directly with the end-user(s) Yes 11

The EMPOWER project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement no 636249 Lessons Learnt in integrating disciplines in research Teams with (genuine) track record of disciplinary integration are high-value prospects and are likely to succeed at new disciplinary research A ‘facilitating’ approach to research management is less likely to succeed than a directional approach Under pressure, team members are likely to resort to comfort zone of disciplinary base and disciplinary agenda Can team members adopt clear, low-register communication that cuts across disciplines and language barriers? Culture of mutual respect – everyone is an expert ‘someone’ needs the whole picture in the team and in the research 12
