4 #4 – James Madison Was raised in Orange County, Virginia. Attended College of New Jersey – later renamed Princeton. Passes the bar exam – becomes a lawyer. 1776: Helped write the Virginia state Constitution. 1778-1779: served on the Council of State in Virginia. 1780-1783: served as a delegate from Virginia to the Confederation Congress.

5 #4 – James Madison 1784-1786: served in the Virginia legislature. 1787: delegate to the Constitutional Convention. Created the Virginia Plan: 1. Federal court system 2. A strong executive branch 3. A bicameral legislature “Father of the Constitution”

6 #4 – James Madison 1787-88: member of the Confederation Congress. 1789-1797: U.S. Representative from Virginia. 1794: married Dolly Paine Todd 1799-1801: served as a Virginia legislator. 1801: appointed Secretary of State under Jefferson’s Presidency

7 #4 – James Madison He helped negotiate the Louisiana Purchase. 1809: elected 4 th President of the U.S.

8 #4 – James Madison 1812: War of 1812 - Madison asks Congress to declare war with Britain. Britain continues to seize American cargo ships in the Atlantic. August 1814: Washington D.C. is invaded by the British. Destroys the city. Burns down the White House.

9 #4 – James Madison Sep. 14, 1814: The British attack Baltimore, Maryland. Francis Scott Key, a witness, saw the U.S. flag over Fort McHenry. When the battle was over the flag was still there…. He writes the Star Spangled Banner. It is only a poem at first. It is made into a song around the 1900’s.

10 #4 James Madison Dec. 24, 1814: Treaty of Ghent is signed. Ends the War of 1812. 1817: Helps negotiate the Rush-Bagot Agreement: No military along the Canada/U.S border. 1817: Ends his Presidency.

11 1829: When Jefferson dies he takes over the creation of the University of Virginia. 1817-36: Retires to his estate – Montpelier. June 28, 1836: Madison dies – natural causes

12 Interesting Facts: 1812: War with Britain begins 1814: Washington D.C. burned to the ground. 1814: Francis Scott Key writes the “Star Spangled Banner” 1814: Treaty of Ghent signed – ends war. 1815: Battle of New Orleans fought 1816: Baltimore becomes the first city with gas lighting. 1816: miners safety lamp invented.
