7 Tension between the U.S. and Britain was on the rise. The British were at war with France.  The British began seizing American ships and forcing American sailors into military service. As a result:  The U.S. refused to buy British good, hurting Britain’s economy.  The British Government restricted trade with American merchants as well.

8 Decision for War  Most members of Congress that voted for war were from the South and West.  They were nicknamed the War Hawks They were led by Henry Clay and John C. Calhoun

10  The Americans in the South and West favored war because British trade restrictions had hurt Southern planters and Western farmers  President James Madison asked Congress to declare war.  The vote split with the South and West generally voting for war, while the Northeast was against the war

11 During this war we will see:  The U.S battle Native Americans  The U.S invade Canada  Important battles in Baltimore and New Orleans  Washington D.C. attacked and The White House burned.  A strong sense of nationalism, or patriotism would emerge
