I. John Calvin Born in France in 1509. Father wanted him to be a priest. Studied to be a priest in southern France. Did not like listening to the Catholic priests explaining the Bible. He wanted to study the Bible himself. Dedicated himself to learning as much about the Bible as possible.

I.John Calvin Calvin’s study of the Bible led him to disagree with the Catholic Church about several things. Stopped studying to be a priest and moved into the study of law. Moved from France to Switzerland when he was 28. He continued to write many books about the Bible and to criticize the Catholic Church. Died at the age of 55.

II. John Calvin’s Teachings John Calvin wrote several books about how he thought Christians should believe. His most famous idea was predestination. This means that God determined whether or not you were going to heaven or hell at the beginning of time. In other words, the decision of whether or not you go to heaven or hell has already been decided.

II. John Calvin’s Teachings The people that God chose at the beginning of time are called the “elect.” Calvin said that people do not choose to be good. God chooses to make some people good and some people bad. Calvin said that people were naturally evil, and only through God could they become good.

II. John Calvin’s Teachings John Calvin said that Jesus was not sent to save everyone. Rather he was only sent to save the people that God had already chosen to save. John Calvin said that when God chooses a person to be one of the “elect” they can not choose to be evil.

III. Disagreements Many people disagree with John Calvin. Many people feel that people have more of a choice in their life about whether or not to be good or evil. What do you think?
