Are you looking for additional support with integrating Common Core Standards which will help our students build reading, writing, research and problem-solving skills? Then you’re watching the right Power Point slide show as I address goals for our LIT program, year one!

Elk Plain’s LIT program will be guided by the Washington State Library and Media Framework (WLMA) mission and standards. WLMA’s mission statement will be used to support our school with its key concerns, programs and initiatives: to ensure that Elk Plain students are effective users and producers of information and ideas As your colleague: I ask that you please help me assess the program and planning three times a year so I may ensure our program meets the mission. (don’t worry if you don’t remember the mission by the end of the day, you’ll be seeing and hearing it in action all over Elk Plain this year)

Information and Technology Literacy Instruction: As our students’ Information and Technology Literacy Instruction teacher, I can provide a number of tools to assist students with building a variety of skills including: Making online Google surveys to poll peers on topics of interest for research Teaching students critical thinking skills when deciding if a website is viable to use for research Teaching students and informing parents on how to be responsible and safe digital citizens Providing practice and preparation for SBA As your Information and Technology Literacy partner, I can assist you by: Helping prevent plagiarism in research projects Team teaching on major units of study (such as cbas, state reports, presidents and first ladies) Creating Google Doc formative and summative assessments Meet with grade level teams to assist you with technology integration and research/project support

Year Five LIT Vision 2020-21 Where do I wish to take our program in five years? Well, here are some ideas…

Informational and Technology Literacy Instruction Dream: Students are: Applying information problem-solving strategies throughout school on a regular basis Training peers on how to use technology tools and to create projects in cooperative teams Demonstrating critical thinking processes, technological competency and reading proficiency through electronic portfolios that can be Skyped to military parents serving out of state and abroad, teachers, peers and administration Creating podcasts and videos to share book trailers and to capture students reading books to send to family in other states or serving abroad Running a student film festival in our school and at our district tech fair – it is juried by peers Skyping with a community of learners elsewhere in the world Creating and maintaining a library website that gives times when community members can come and use the library for jobs and other tasks Information Management and Services Out-of-date books have been weeded out of our collection and more contemporary award-winning and student/teacher-choice books (print and electronic) have been added – GRAPHIC NOVELS ARE IN THE HOUSE!! Every classroom has a set of iPads for students to demonstrate growth with electronic portfolios they maintain and can share with parents, teachers and administration through the cloud

We increase our budget by at least 50% through donations, grants A school-wide apple TV program has been installed sllowing students to broadcast student-generated shorts and trailers through news programs We have added comfortable chairs, painted library walls and created a comfy environment for all learning styles Additional staff have been added to the library to boost technology skills of middle school students Our advisory board consisting of teachers, specialists and administration and is collaborating on boosting the three functions Ensuring all students have access to a technology device to build information and technology skills an hour each day and to use at home Have organized an electronic research system to be accessed in the cloud or district server Weekly makerspace activity moderated by students Reading Advocacy Dream: 100% of our students are participating in Read and Lead Fluency and accuracy rates have increased by 50% Students beg and plead to read, read, read! Students are presenting poetry at Poetry Slam Night Parents are using the library to find books to read aloud to their children Collaborating with Pierce County Library so ALL students have a library card and can check out books on electronic devices Elk Plain serves as a site for regular Book Mobile visits to provide books for Elk Plain families and community members

Assessment is ongoing and is used to determine efficacy of student- driven initiatives, program offerings, etc. Results are published and used to create a stronger program with assistance from the Library Advisory Board. Ultimately, my vision is to mold students to become collaborative, independent and critical thinkers and makers who experience success in any “circle”. My desire for them to experience satisfaction and contentment as human beings moves me to serve them. I believe the library can provide the means to help students attain these goals! This is why I chose to become a teacher-librarian!
