A comparison…

Any form of reproduction in which the offspring are genetically identical to the parent A single parent grows a clone or copy of itself that has the exact same DNA as itself We know that humans do not naturally reproduce by cloning but what kinds of organisms do? Brainstorm a list of organisms in your table groups.

What organisms reproduce asexually? Bacteria Plants Fungi (like mushrooms) and ferns Yeast, hydra

There are FOUR different types of asexual reproduction: 1. Binary Fission 2. Vegetative Reproduction 3. Spore Production 4. Budding

Occurs in single-celled organisms (like bacteria) Contents are copied and the cell divides in two Just like mitosis

Occurs in some plants Does not require the production of a seed or spore

There are different forms of vegetative reproduction: Runners, suckers, tubers and bulbs – outgrowths from the original plant that produce new plants Strawberries use runnersAspen trees use suckers

There are different forms of vegetative reproduction: Runners, suckers, tubers and bulbs – outgrowths from the original plant that produce new plants Potatoes are tubersTulips grow from bulbs

There are different forms of vegetative reproduction: Cuttings – you can take a cutting from a plant and it will grow its own roots and eventually develop into a whole new plant

Used by fungi and ferns Asexual spores contain the DNA of only one parent and they will grow into a new fern or fungi

Occurs in organisms like yeast, hydra and sea sponges A bud grows out of the parent and gets bigger and bigger until it is identical to the parent In hydra and yeast, the bud breaks off when it is fully grown and becomes independent In sea sponges, the bud stays attached when it is fully grown

Reproduction in which the offspring are genetically different from the parents Involves the exchange of DNA between two individuals through the fusion of sex cells

There are TWO different types of sexual reproduction: 1. Cross-fertilization 2. Sexual Reproduction in Animals Once the two gametes fuse, fertilization occurs and a zygote is formed. Once cell division begins, an embryo is formed.
