1 Week 2 Greek and Latin Root Words

2 -capit-, -cipit- Example Words: Capital – the most important city
Meaning Origin head Latin Example Words: Capital – the most important city Precipitation – originally ‘act of falling headlong, haste’. Now used in terms of snow, dew, rain, etc. Be especially careful with this root! Lots of words that you might not realize contain it and/or why it is part of a word.

3 -carne- Example Words: Carnage – killing of a large number of people.
Meaning Origin meat, flesh Latin Example Words: Carnage – killing of a large number of people. Carrion – the decaying flesh of dead animals. Reincarnate – someone to undergo rebirth in another body as practiced in some religions.

4 -ceipt-, -cept-, -ceit-, -ceiv-
Meaning Origin to take hold, seize Latin Example Words: Receipt – the action of receiving something. Intercept – to obstruct someone or something from continuing to a destination Deceit – action or practice of deceiving someone by concealing or misrepresenting the truth.

5 -centr-, -center- Example Words:
Meaning Origin Middle Greek Example Words: Eccentric – someone who is unconventional or ‘outside the middle’ Epicenter – the central point of something Egocentric – thinking of oneself without regard to others; self- centered

6 -chron-, -temp- Example Words:
Meaning Origin time Latin & Greek Example Words: Chronic – continuing or occurring again and again Temporal – of or relating to time as opposed to eternity Extemporaneous – composed, performed, or uttered on the spur of the moment.

7 -cid-, -cis- Example Words:
Meaning Origin To cut or kill Latin Example Words: Decide – to come to a resolution, to kill the discussion Regicide – The action of killing a king Incision – a surgical cut made in the skin or flesh

8 -circum- Example Words: Circumference – Ugh! Math!
Meaning Origin around Latin Example Words: Circumference – Ugh! Math! Circumstance – details related to and about an event or action

9 -clam- Example Words: Exclaim – shouting something in excitement
Meaning Origin cry out Latin Example Words: Exclaim – shouting something in excitement Claim – to say something that is true when others might disagree (ahem! English!)

Meaning Origin to know Latin Example Words: Incognito – to hide a true identity Cognizant – knowledgeable of something, especially through personal experience. Recognition – act of accepting that something is true or important
