6R6R 6L6L 05/31/11 Do Now: Some waves have more energy Write a paragraph that explains how the waves are similar and how they are different. Use the following words: amplitude, energy, wavelength, and frequency. Draw the 3 waves. Observe, Question, Comment Objective: Students will… Describe the properties of waves Describe the different kinds of waves in the electromagnetic spectrum 05/31/11 Notes: 1. How are wavelength and frequency related? Long wavelength  Low frequency 2. How are amplitude and energy related? Big Amplitude  More Energy 3. How are FREQUENCY and ENERGY related??? Who wants to guess??? High frequency  ______Energy Summary: Big Amplitude + High Frequency = VERY HIGH ENERGY

NOTES: Ch.2, Sec.1—Waves/Electromagnetic Spectrum PART 2 10. Hertz = the unit used to measure frequency of a wave Example: a wave that cycles once per second has a frequency of 1 Hz 11. Electromagnetic Waves = transfer electrical AND magnetic energy --TWO WAVES at 90 degree angle to each other -- does NOT need a medium --move at the speed of light --Real-life examples: light, radio waves, microwaves, X-rays, gamma rays Please draw the picture!!! 5R

14. Visible Light = the electromagnetic waves that the HUMAN eye can see --all the others are INVISIBLE to humans!!! (RADIO WAVES, INFRARED RAYS, ULTRAVIOLET RAYS, X-RAYS, and GAMMA RAYS) 6R Visible Light

NOTES: Ch.2, Sec.1—Waves/Electromagnetic Spectrum PART 2 12. Electromagnetic Radiation= the energy transferred by electromagnetic waves --no need for a medium  can move E thru empty space --this means we can see the sun and stars in space!!! 11. Electromagnetic Spectrum = complete range of electromagnetic waves placed in order of increasing FREQUENCY and ENERGY PAGE 44-45 6R

Cornel Notes: Electromagnetic Spectrum Turn to p. 42 in textbook Read p. 42 and first two paragraphs on p. 43 Take notes while you read – In the notes section, record the main ideas for each paragraph IN YOUR OWN WORDS – In the left column, record your questions/drawings When done, record a 3- 5 sentence summary IN YOUR OWN WORDS in the summary box Questions and Drawings Notes page 42 and 43  What is an Electromagnetic Wave? -  Producing EM waves -  Energy -  Speed -  What is the EM Spectrum? p. 43 - Summary:

Exit Slip: “New Waves for Safe Flying” Get out a HALF SHEET of paper Put heading: Full name, date, period, title Read the article to quietly yourself Answer the following questions as you read (Do not need to copy question!) 1.What are the two types of scanning technologies? 2.How are they the same? 3.How are they different? 4.Why are there possible effects to human health? 5.Why is the backscatter machine considered to be less safe than the millimeter-wave system? (Hint: Which one uses higher energy waves?)
