Do Now: (5 min) When you send a text message to a friend from your phone, how do you think the message gets to their phone? Explain using TWO full sentences.

11/4/09 Cornell Notes, Stations

Electromagnetic (EM) Radiation energy that exhibits wave-like behavior

Characteristics of Waves 1. Wavelength ( λ ) : The distance between successive crest or troughs. Measured in m, cm, nm. 2. Frequency ( υ ) : The number of waves that pass a given point per second. Measured in 1/s (s -1 ) or Hertz (Hz). 3. Amplitude: The waves height from the origin to the crest or the trough.

Why is Electromagnetic Radiation Important? We encounter it and use it every day! Visible light: so we can see UV light: what burns our skin Radio waves: so we can listen to music Microwaves: so we can eat our food and send text messages/call people Infrared: so we can get warm when it’s cold outside.

Electromagnetic Spectrum The range of all possible wavelengths of electromagnetic radiation There are 7 different types of EM radiation that differ in energy and wavelength 123567 WAVELENGTH ENERGY 4 4

Electromagnetic Radiation Stations There are 7 different types of EM radiation Work in your group At each station, you will be reading about each type of radiation TWO MINUTES AT EACH STATION! For each type of radiation (each station), you need to write on your EM sheet: 1.The Type of Radiation 2.The Wavelength range for that type of radiation 3.An object that is relatively the same size as the wavelength of that type of radiation

Quick Check How are wavelength and energy related? Shortest wavelength = higher energy -or- Longest wavelength = lowest energy What type of radiation is the highest in energy? Gamma Rays What type of radiation has the longest wavelength? Radiowaves

Key Points Electromagnetic radiation behaves like a wave. There are 7 types of electromagnetic radiation and they differ depending upon wavelength The shorter the wavelength, the higher the energy

Summary On the bottom of your notes, answer the following (you need a minimum of 5 sentences total): 1. What are 2 new things that you learned today? 2. Why are these things important? 3. What questions do you have about what we learned today? KEEP YOUR WORKSHEET IN YOUR FOLDER! YOU WILL NEED IT TOMORROW!
