4 Sidewalk Infill Sidewalk Infill Policy was approved by Council on June 1 st, 2015. Sidewalk infrastructure is a key component of the urban environment that encourages and facilitates active transportation, supports community health, neighbourhood connectivity, community safety. The City should endeavor to have sidewalks on both sides to support a sustainable community and a pedestrian friendly environment. Streets are assessed on an individual basis and recommendations for sidewalk infill are presented to Council for endorsement. An exemption may apply if the sidewalk were to result in negative impacts that cannot be mitigated, such as the loss of healthy mature trees of a non-invasive species.

5 Sidewalk Infill – Scoring Factors Existing roadways that do not already have sidewalks on both sides will be rated and prioritized into 3 categories based on criteria such as: Distance to a transit stop; Distance to an elementary school; Distance to Downtown; Distance to a commercial zone; Distance to a community centre, park or trail. Points are assigned for each of these criteria.

6 Sidewalk Infill – Priority Ranking Brunswick Avenue scored 75 points and is rated as a Priority 1. Guelph Street (Ahrens to Brunswick) scored 85 points and is rated as a Priority 1. Guelph Street (Brunswick to Margaret) scored 60 points and is rated as a Priority 2. According to the policy, the Priority 1 category requires sidewalks on both sides of the roadway; as these streets connect to a significant number of pedestrian origins and destinations. The Priority 2 category also requires sidewalks on both sides of the roadway; however exemptions may be applied.
