Aim : How do you conduct a presentation that will adequately help others to understand your research study? (article/project) Do Now: What do you know?Do Now: What do you know? –What is the purpose of a presentation? List three (3) things you hope to achieve during a presentation of an article or project study. Homework:Homework: 1. Begin to identify presentation article.

Model for Presenting a Research Article (…an outline) Your presentation should emphasize the following parts: 1.Article Factoids 2.Introduction/Purpose(s)*** 3.Hypotheses 4.Methodology 5.Results*** 6.Discussion*** 7.Conclusion*** 8.Further Investigations/Applications***

Article Factoids Give the author (s) names Title Exact Citation (journal, year, volume, pages) State the topic of the study State the purpose of the research

Introduction Introduction information to the audience which will capture their attention Which general problem is the author (s) addressing? Introduce main idea of the study Review of Literature shows a “funneling effect” –What does other research in this area show? Adequate searches of previous literature made. –Why were these literature searches relevant? –Definition of terms should be addressed (don’t list the definitions, but explain them briefly)

Introduction Need bridge to review of literature –“–“Although this has been done, the following (state objective) still needs to be examined…” –“–“The purpose of reference 1, paragraph 3 is…” –I–Include relevant facts for each paragraph in the introduction which are needed to explain the author’s purpose….(BRIEF) REFERENCE ALL CITATIONS –(–(–(–(Author, year of publication) –(–(–(–(Author et al., year of publication)!!

Hypotheses What does the experimenter think will happen in the study? Must be plain and clear Must be supported by current literature (2005 to the present)

Methodology [Materials and Procedures] What are the materials used? How were the materials used? How does the methodology/research plan help to explain the outcomes of the study? Write in PAST tense using passive voice –YOU MAY USE-A FLOW CHART or ARROWS TO SHOW THE PROGRESS OF THE EXPERIMENT!!!!

Methodology [Materials and Procedures] “The research identified…” “It has been shown…” “The following techniques may be used to…” As an example follow methodology examples written in your best paper (for research study presentations)

Results (Data) Clearly identify independent and dependent variables Clearly but briefly explain content of graphs, figures, and charts Don’t forget to label all axes Research studies should have at least 7-8 graphs, charts, tables, or pictures

Results Results state what charts, tables, and graphs say, not what they mean. Describe the visuals, not the meaning You begin to show how the interpretation of data either supports or negates your hypotheses Good example statement for presentation may include ….“It is also significant to note…as the population reached 15 minutes of incubation, the rate of apoptosis increase. It was 50% greater than at time zero.”

Discussion Clearly interpret the data in the results section Interpretation of the data either supports or refutes the hypotheses. If the hypotheses are disproved, what new hypotheses are presented?

Discussion Interpretation of data and relevant all data back to the original objectives “This data supports the objective/hypothesis…” “A novel finding has been identified…”

Conclusion Clearly state which hypotheses were supported and which were not. Explain the applications of the research study What future investigations should be employed?

Conclusion (you may want to include the following statements in your presentation script) State the significance of your study; determine the perspective of whether this research will support a new science “It is significant that the works here may lead towards…” “This work has demonstrated (showed) that…” “More visionary findings…” “More global work is seen when…” “A re-evaluation of ….might be necessary…” “This research has initiated a baseline/novel finding that will change scientific thinking about…”

Application Why was this study important to the scientific community? How will your findings impact society? What about your study was novel?

References Mandatory for some competitions in PPT and on board (not all competitions). List in alphabetical order or as per the appearance in your work

Acknowledgements List mentors and graduate students who have helped you in the lab. List the facilities which purchased or gave you your supplies List anyone who has assisted you in completing your study

OVERVIEW This presentation should be completed in 6 minutes. You will be timed and stopped, so practice. Why should you chose a more general article to present this time? Write a script…you do NOT have to memorize verbatim but it will help you to get focused. NO papers or index cards while presenting. REVIEW Rubric when writing presentation script. Use catch phrases, to obtain, keep, and maintain the audiences attention.

PowerPoint Presentations General Outline & Order Title with name Brief introduction/Initial Idea Introduction/Review of Literature (with citations) Hypothesis [Purpose/Objective(s)] Methodology Results Statistical Analysis Discussion Conclusion Future Research/Applications References Acknowledgements
