Topic: Maps PSSA: 3.5.7.A/S8.D.1.1

Objective: TLW use cardinal directions and latitude and longitude to locate places on a map.

MI #1: What are maps? A map is a representation of the features of a physical body, such as the Earth. In other words, a map is an example of a physical model.

MI #2: Finding Direction Reference points are fixed locations on the Earth’s surface from which direction and location can be described. The North and South Poles are used as reference points to determine the four cardinal directions (north, south, east, and west).

MI#3: True North A compass is a tool that uses the Earth’s natural magnetism to show direction. True north is the direction of the geographic North Pole. Magnetic north is the direction a compass points. The angle to correct the difference between true north and magnetic north is called magnetic declination.

MI #4: Latitude and Longitude Latitude is the distance north or south of the equator, expressed in degrees. Longitude is the distance east or west of the prime meridian, expressed in degrees.

So What…? Real Life Application Understanding maps is important because maps are an important tool for finding location, measuring distance, determining direction, and planning trips.
