Research project Title: “Using Social Media to Promote Events: Benefits and Dangers” Lauren Hoban DL231 Screencast

Social media Definition of social media today “forms of electronic communication through which users create online communities to share information, ideas, personal messages, and other content” Reason why I chose this topic, was because I am a frequent user of both of the social networking sites and I want to expand my knowledge when it comes to promoting events through social media.

What type of research I used Throughout the proposal I used two types of research 1.Primary research: I obtained primary research by conducting a survey, I chose this method as it is inexpensive, although it may be time consuming

What type of research I used 2.Secondary research: Is work investigated through previous published research, books, articles and the internet.

Background on Facebook Facebook is currently the biggest and most popular social network on the internet, and has more than 800 million active members. Established in February of 2004, Facebook has a wide variety of different language that will suit its 800 million active members.

Background on Twitter Twitter has a 140- character limit and was established in March of 2006. Twitter has gained global popularity, with over 200 million users sending over 200 million tweets and 1.6 billion searches a day.

The dangers of social media Throughout my research I focused on: In 2010 Nestle found themselves in a social media meltdown regarding their usage of palm oil. This irritated Greenpeace and they took their outrage out on Nestle’s Facebook

The dangers of social media Nestle did not respond in a appropriate manner and made matters worse, but only for the company. This lead to bad publicity for the company In my opinion if this did not start on Facebook, I do not think many of people would known that Nestle used palm oil.

The dangers of social media When it comes to twitter I felt that celebrities were targeted it more through the dangers of social media. Prime example was when Rio Ferdinand referred to Ashley Cole as a “choc-ice” in a tweet.

The dangers of social media The comment immediately attracted attention, with some interpreting the use of the term as racially insulting This illustrates even though Rio Ferdinand claims that it was not racial comment, you can understand why people would think differently.

The benefits of social media Creates awareness. Among a large scale of people. Tremendous feedback (Facebook and Twitter)

The benefits of social media One particular event that comes to mind is Movember. Non-profit organisation This particular event, the aim is for the awareness of men’s health
