3 2 nd Battle of Bull Run The Second Battle of Bull Run was one of the most significant Confederate victories of the Civil War. The battle took place on August 29 th and 30 th of 1862 at the same battle site of the first battle. The first day the Union soldiers were on the attack. The Confederates were outnumbered but the Union’s attacks were poorly coordinated. 4 2 nd Battle of Bull Run Pope had weakened the left side of his army and made the right side strong in hopes to break through the Confederate line. Lee had to call in reinforcements after this and they crashed the side of the Union Army. The Union army was able to hold together because the line of retreat was full of fresh Federal soldiers. Lee had defeated the Union’s 75,000 men with only 55,000 men. After the battle the Union general, Pope, was replaced by McClellan. However it was McClellan’s poor performance in front of Richmond that left Pope’s army exposed. The Confederates had 1,481 soldiers dead, 7,627 wounded and 89 missing. The Union had 1,724 soldiers dead, 8,372 wounded and 5,958 missing. http://www.historyofwar.org/articles/battles_bullrun2.html
