3 “The Colonial Response: Events Leading to the American Revolution”

4 3 Colonies in 17 th and 18 th centuries SALUTARY NEGLECT –Britain didn’t pay close attention to the colonies. –Colonies governed themselves.

5 4 17 th and 18 th centuries Great Britain followed a policy of MERCANTILISM –The theory that a country should sell more goods to other countries than it buys –Favorable balance of trade: Profit made on exports exceeds the costs of imports

6 The colonists felt… Fine as long as they were making money and allowed to handle their own affairs. (Run government, etc.)

7 6 1600s British government passed a series of NAVIGATION ACTS – The colonies could trade only with the mother country. – American goods must be exported in British ships.

8 Proclamation of 1763  Law prohibiting the colonists to move west of the Appalachian Mountains.  Cause: England still in debt from the French and Indian War and didn’t want to start another war.  Effect: The colonist still moved west anyway because owning land was important King George

13 Sam Adams and the Sons of Liberty Samuel Adams led the protests in Boston against the taxes. He began a secret society called the Sons of Liberty.

17 Was it a massacre? *The Boston Massacre was a street fight that occurred on March 5, 1770, between a "patriot" mob, throwing snowballs, stones, and sticks, and a squad of British soldiers. 5 colonist died and 6 were wounded This led to a campaign by speech-writers to rouse the ire of the citizenry. Discussion: Why do they call it a massacre and how will this help the “rebels” in their cause for a revolution?

21 The Coercive or Intolerable Acts 1. Port Bill - The British closed the ports until the tea was paid for. 2. Government Act – Gave the British governor complete control over the colonies. 3. New Quartering Act – housing soldiers 4. Administration of Justice Act – A British soldier accused of a crime would be transported back to England for trial. 20

How has the Stamp Act affected him personally? Provide evidence. 3. Do you believe his account? Give one reason why you do, one why you don’t. 29
