2 one of the greatest American writers of the 20th century, wrote short stories and novels of the Jazz Age member of the Lost Generation – short attendance in the World War I came from an Irish Catholic family, studied in Princeton university notorious alcoholic, his wife Zelda suffered from schizophrenia (autobiographical elements in his book Tender Is the Night)

5 Nick Carraway (the narrator) after fighting in World War I comes to Long Island Sound (West Egg) and rents a small bungalow in a wealthy community. He meets his cousin Daisy Buchanan and her husband Tom. He starts dating with Jordan Baker and gets to know that Tom has a mistress Myrtle. He is invited to a party of his wealthy neighbour Jay Gatsby. They begin to be friends. Gatsby‘s past is very mysterious and the rumours about him are contradictory. He is said to be a war hero and very wealthy businessman.

6 Nick reveals that Gatsby had fallen in love with Daisy before the war when he was very poor and she was very rich. After the war, he bought his house near Daisy and Tom to get in contact with her. He wants Nick to arrange a meeting for him and Daisy. Gatsby and Daisy begin a love affair, which Tom reveals afterwards. While returning from a hotel, Daisy drives Gatsby‘s car. She accidentally hits Myrtle (Tom‘s mistress) and kills her. Myrtle‘s husband thinks the driver was Gatsby and kills him. In the end, Nick arranges a funeral for Gatsby, where nobody arrives but his father.
