3 Citizen… “ A native or naturalized member of state or nation who owes allegiance to its government and is entitles to its protection.”

4 Rights of a U.S. Citizen Voting in federal elections Being able to serve on a jury Travel with U.S. passport Being able to run for federal office Being able to obtain federal grants and scholarships

5 Responsibilities Defending and supporting our constitution Serving our country in the military (when needed) Respecting the laws of the U.S. Respecting individual rights of others Being active in your community

6 Different Kinds of Citizenship Citizenship through Naturalization Citizenship through a parent Dual Citizenship

7 Citizenship through Naturalization Granted to someone who is… – A permanent resident – Green card holder Citizenship is given to someone who was not naturally born here in the United States

8 Citizenship through a parent Born outside of U.S. At least one parent is a U.S. citizen

9 Dual Citizenship Obtains citizenship in more then one country Citizens in the United States and another country Grandpa example

10 How to become a U.S. citizen Requirements Steps

11 Requirements 18 years or older Lived here legally for 5 years Understand English writing, reading, and speaking Basics of history, government and Constitution

12 Steps you have to take… 4 basic steps Have to fulfill all citizen requirements before you start the steps

13 Step #1 Complete Application – Includes detailed information About family Employment Criminal background Etc.

14 Step #2 Photographed Fingerprinted

15 Step #3 Interviewed Test about knowledge of English Language and civics (reading, writing, language, history, and constitution)

16 Step #4 Go to court Take oath of allegiance to the United States All steps complete= United States Citizen
