 What is physical activity? Why is it important?  If you had the option of taking the stairs, elevator or escalator to the third floor level of a mall/shopping center, Which one would you take? Why?  Which one would provide you with the most physical activity? How? http://youtu.be/5Nj3smpfUtM

 Any form of movement that causes your body to use energy. Activities may include:  Raking leaves at home  Stocking shelves at a part-time job  Marching in the school band  Playing on sport teams

 Can improve your level of physical fitness, which is the ability to carry out daily tasks easily and have enough reserve energy to respond to unexpected demands.

Physical Activity Physical Fitness Health and Wellness

 Helps to strengthen physical, mental/emotional and social health…  What are some benefits of P.A? List at least five for each wellness component. Group Work Assignment  Physical  Social  Mental/Emotional

 Physical: › increases your energy › improves your posture › strengthens your muscles and bones › reduce the risk of serious diseases  Social › Building self-confidence › interact & cooperate with others  Mental/Emotional › help reduce stress › manage anger or frustration in a healthy way

 May cause health problems that negatively effects the following body systems:  Cardiovascular System › regular physical activity strengthens the heart muscle, allowing it to pump blood more efficiently and lowering cholesterol.  Respiratory System › regular physical activity allows you to breathe larger amounts of air, and the muscles used in the respiration don’t tire as quickly.  Nervous System › respond more quickly to stimuli, physical activity can also improve your reaction time.  Musculoskeletal System Reduces risk of developing fragile bones preventing osteoporosis

 Physical Inactivity is lack of being active which is known as having a sedentary lifestyle.  Sedentary lifestyle  Sedentary lifestyle is a way of life that involves little physical activity. An individual may spend more time playing on the computer or video games rather than being active.

 May cause: › An increase risk of osteoporosis  condition characterized by a decrease in bone density, producing porous and fragile bones. Porous and fragile bones fracture more easily than healthy bones. › Unhealthful weight gain which can lead to:  Cardiovascular Disease  Atherosclerosis is a condition that develops when a substance called plaque builds up in the walls of the arteries.  Type 2 Diabetes  a person's body still produces insulin but doesn't respond normally to the insulin the body makes. So glucose is less able to enter the cells and do its job of supplying energy.  Cancer  Occurs when cells that are not normal grow and spread very fast.

 Evaluate your current level of physical activity: › On a level from 1 (not good) to 10 (excellent), where are you currently? › How are you obtaining you physical fitness levels? › What can you do to continue or to improve engaging in physical activity daily? › What prevents you from being physically active?

 Understanding how the food you eat gets converted into energy can help you maintain a healthy weight.  Metabolism: › The process by which your body gets energy from food. When you are physically active,  your metabolic rate rises  your body burns more calories than when it is at rest  you continue to burn more calories several hours after an activity

 Children & Adolescents › should engage in one hour (60mins) or more of moderate i.e. brisk walking. › vigorous aerobic activity daily, i.e. biking or sports. › should incorporate muscle-strengthening activities, i.e. sit-ups. › Engage in bone-strengthening activities, i.e. running.

 In the FITT formula, each letter represents a factor for determining how to obtain fitness benefits from physical activity: Frequency  F Frequency; how often a person will perform physical activities. Intensity  I Intensity; how hard a person will perform physical activities. Time  T Time; how long a person will perform physical activities. Type  T Type; type of physical activity (exercise) performed
