Line 1: __ Your name Line 2: _, _, _ (3 personal characteristics or physical traits) Line 3: Brother or sister of__ or son/daughter of ___ Line 4: Who loves__, __, and __ (3 people, things, ideas) Line 5: Who feels__ about__ (1 emotion about 1 thing) Line 6: Who needs__, __, and __ (3 things you need) Line 7: Who gives __, __, and __ (3 objects you share) Line 8: Who fears__, __, and __ (3 items) Line 9: Who'd like to see, __ (1 place, or person) Line 10: Who dreams of __ (1 item or idea ) Line 11: A student of__ (your school or teacher's name) Line 12: __ (Nickname or repeat your first name)

3 ACROSTIC: In Acrostic poems, the first letters of each line are aligned vertically to form a word. The word is the subject of the poem. Do not use your name, otherwise, you may choose your subject. An example is- Elegantly and efficiently shaped Good to eat Great fun to find at Easter Smooth shelled

4 Apology Poem Think of a situation from your own life. Have you ever been forced to apologize when you didn’t really mean it? Come up with at least two examples of times like this from your own experience. For each of the examples, write a very short description of what you have done (the action). Then, think about sense details (taste, touch, sound, sight, or smell) that will offer your readers a clear idea of why the action was worth it to you. I have eaten the plums that were in the icebox and which you were probably saving for breakfast Forgive me they were delicious so sweet and so cold This is just to say that I have knocked over the tower of wooden blocks you spent all morning building I watched you set each block carefully in place Forgive me It made the most wonderful clatter when they all came tumbling down Examples:

5 CREATE A CINQUAIN POEM Cinquains have five lines Line 1: Title (noun) - 1 word Line 2: Description - 2 words Line 3: Action - 3 words Line 4: Feeling (phrase) - 4 words Line 5: Title (synonym for the title) - 1 word Example: puppy ornery, naughty jumping, chewing reaching, a playful bundle of trouble Boxer

6 COLOR: A poem about your favorite color. Express your feelings about a single color with analogies or similes or list nouns which are (or remind you of) that color. Another easy form is to use the 5 senses-looks like, sounds like, smells like, tastes like, feels like. Color looks like Color sounds like Color smells like Color tastes like Color feels like

7 Found Poem Using the lyrics of the given songs in the handout, create a found poem. Follow the instructions in the handout.

8 HAIKU: Haiku is Japanese poetry that reflects on nature and feelings. You use your observation skills to write what you see in a new or different way. There are three lines with five syllables in the first line, seven syllables in the second, and five syllables in the third. Example: Beaches by Kaitlyn Guenther Sand scatters the beach Waves crash on the sandy shore Blue water shimmers

9 I Am Poem I am (two special characteristics) I wonder (something you are actually curious about) I hear (an imaginary sound) I see (an imaginary sight) I want (an actual desire) I am (the first line of the poem restated) I pretend (something you pretend to do) I feel (a feeling about something imaginary) I touch (an imaginary touch) I worry (something that really bothers you) I cry (something that makes you very sad) I am (the first line of the poem repeated I understand (something you know is true) I say (something you believe in) I dream (something you actually dream about) I try (something you make an effort to do) I hope (something you actually hope for) I am (the first line of the poem repeated)

10 Loop Poem Loop Poetry is a poetry form created by Hellon. There are no restrictions on the number of stanzas nor on the syllable count for each line. In each stanza, the last word of the first line becomes the first word of line two, last word of line 2 becomes the first word of line 3, last word of line 3 becomes the first word of line 4. This is followed for each stanza. The rhyme scheme is abcb.Hellon How I See You Eyes that don't see see the things that you do do you wish me to describe describe how I see you... Skin so delicate delicate as a rose rose that will blossom blossom as it grows.

11 6 Ways Poem What kind of thinking is this? How is the blackbird being used in this stanza? What are the observable features of this way of thinking? Use flexible thinking to create your 6 ways of thinking about your topic. Create 4 stanzas of 3-4 lines each. Example: Download the poem “Thirteen Ways of Looking at a Blackbird” Each of the sections represents a conscious attempt to think about the blackbird in a different way. Stanza One, for example, reads Among twenty snowy mountains, The only moving thing Was the eye of the blackbird. there are several different kinds of contrast on display: there are many mountains, but only one blackbird; the mountains are white, the blackbird is black, the mountains are big, the blackbird is small; the mountains are still, the blackbird's eye is in motion. So how are we looking at or thinking about the blackbird here? Perhaps the word contrast might serve as a label here.

12 Pantoum Poem In a traditional Pantoum: The lines are grouped into quatrains (4-line stanzas). The final line of the Pantoum must be the same as its first line. Your pantoum will have 5 stanzas The Pantoum has a rhyme scheme of abab in each quatrain. Thus, the lines rhyme alternately. The pattern is as follows: Stanza 1: L1,L2,L3,L4 Stanza 2: L2,L5,L4,L6 Stanza 3: L5,L7,L6,L8 Stanza 4: L7,L9,L8,L10 Stanza 5: L9,L3,L10,L1 Dance In The Rain Come, dance in the rain with me Let it wash our cares away Drench us through and set us free If only for today Let it wash our cares away Don't worry about tomorrow If only for today Along my path, please follow Don't worry about tomorrow This shower soon will end Along my path, please follow Cast worry to the wind This shower soon will end The memory, it will linger Cast worry to the wind Sate the primal hunger The memory, it will linger Drench us through and set us free Sate the primal hunger Come, dance in the rain with me...

13 MONSTER POEM: Describe an imaginary monster. Try to have a theme (food, sports, animals, school subjects etc.) An example is- "The Scrumptious Sweet- Tooth Monster“ Write a minimum of 3 stanzas 3-4 lines each. The Scrumptious Sweet- Tooth Monster has: Hershey Kiss Cranium Peppermint Smirk Appealing Rock Candy Torso Red Licorice limbs Black Licorice appendages Green and Blue M&M eyes Bubble gum feet that blow up into hefty bubbles when he scampers Snout is made of a bulky scoop of rocky road ice cream that is so cold it will never liquefy Vibrant Colored Chiclets for his choppers Tootsie Rolls for eyebrows In a crown form he has Sweet Tarts for locks of hair Left Fingers are made of grape lollipops Right Fingers are made of Watermelon lollipops This is one appetizing monster! Does it remind you of a personal experience? a story you've heard? an issue? a situation ? 2. Now analyze the poem using the following: Voice Who is speaking? How would you characterize the speaker? To whom is he or she speaking? Tone What is the speaker's tone? How do you know? What type of diction is the poet using? How does the poet's word choice affect the meaning of the poem? the tone? Does the poet employ figures of speech? (Simile, metaphor, personification, hyperbole, understatement) Theme What seems to be the point of the poem? What lesson about life does the speaker want us to learn?
