3 The functions of the nervous system are: ●There will be an electrical signal send to the brain from all senses. ●The brain uses all the impulses to understand what is happening. ●The brain decides what to do. ●The brain sends electrical impulses to the body to act (these are like commands from the brain). Functions

4 The main organs in the nervous system are the brain, spinal cord and the nerves.

5 BRAIN Cerebrum Cerebellu m Brain Stem Spinal Cord The brain has a lot of nerve cells/neurons. The brain is a very complex organ which controls movement, feelings and sensations. Also all the thoughts and plans are developed by the brain.

6 Spinal Cord The brain and the spinal cord together make the CNS (central nervous system). The spinal cord is about 44 cm long in adults. The spinal cord is the main passageway for information from or to the brain and the rest of the nervous system and the other way around.

7 Two main systems of the nervous system Central nervous system(CNS) ❖ Brain ❖ Spinal cord Peripheral nervous system (PNS) ❖ Carries impulses to the (CNS) ❖ Carries impulses from the (CNS)

8 DESCRIPTION OF NERVE CELL/NEURON Neurons are the basic cells of the nervous system. A neuron usually contains a nucleus and at least two long fibers,(dendrites). Dendrites transports impulses to the cell body while the fiber carries impulses away from the cell body. These are specialized cells designed to stimulate other cells in the body in order to communicate. Neurons are excitable, which means they function by using electrical stimulation. Through this electronic message, known as an action potential, neurons are able to cause action in the cells they target.

9 INTERESTING FACTS ❖ If all nerve cells in your brain were lined up it would be 600 miles (966 km) long. ❖ A human brain has 100 billion neurons and an octopus brain has 300 billion. ❖ The right side of your brain controls the left side of your body and the left side of your brain controls the right side of your body. ❖ There are more nerves in our body than stars in the milky way. ❖ A baby has lost about half of their nerve cells before they are even born. ❖ There are about 13,500,000 neurons in only the human spinal cord. ❖ Neurons grow at the rate of 250,000 neurons per minute.
