BIOGRAPHY. o *Her full name is Ruth White. o *She was born March 15, 1942. *She lived in Whitewood, Virginia. o *Her family was extremely poor. o Her parents had a great love of literature. o *When she was six years old, her father, who was a coal miner, was killed in a brawl.

BIOGRAPHY *In her works, she focused primarily on teenage girls *Most of the action in many of her novels takes place in the 1950s * She published her first novel, The City Rose, in 1977 *It was over a decade before her second book appeared * Best Children's Book by a North Carolinian designation

BIOGRAPHY CON.. *Wrote a 1996 good seller book, Belle Prater’s Boy won a John Newbery Medal in 1997. *She didn’t plan to write a sequel to Belle Prater's Boy. *She thought Woodrow's theory about what happened to his mother would be enough for the reader, but it obviously was not. *She also had many letters from readers wanting to know what happened to Belle, and asking her to write a sequel. *Actually, she did the first draft of the sequel in the late nineties. *After many revisions, she created The Search for Belle Prater. *Most of her interview questions were on Belle Prater’s Boy. *For a while, she lived in Virginia Beach, but now she lives in Pennsylvania.

FACTS ABOUT HER LIFE AND FAMILY * When White was in the eighth grade the family moved to Michigan * She returned to Grundy to finish high-school while living with an aunt and uncle * The daughter of John Edward (a coal miner). *Olive (a hospital food server) White; married (divorced); children: Dee Olivia. *She was educated when she was small.
