Spatial Distribution of Fuel Usage: Past and Present Based on a Per Person Analysis

Nuclear Energy 1960 South Carolina 2003 Illinois The use of nuclear energy has grown over the last 30 years, mostly in the eastern and southeastern states. As concerns grow over global climate change, it is likely that the number of nuclear plants will increase.

Geothermal Energy 19602003 VermontNevada Geothermal energy use for generating electricity is still a relatively new concept, as shown by the pictures above. There are only a few states who are taking advantage of this vast source of energy.

Hydroelectric Energy 1960 2003 Washington Oregon There are only a few states who produce a large portion of their power using hydroelectric power plants. These states are located in the northwestern United States, where there are plenty of water sources and mountains to provide the power.

Coal Energy 19602003 Wyoming West Virginia The majority of coal energy use in the past has been in the Ohio River Valley, but recently, there has been a major spike in the coal production in the west, namely Wyoming and North Dakota, due to the lower sulfur content of the coal.

All Petroleum Products 19602003 Nevada Louisiana Some states, like Nevada, have almost cut their usage in half, while states like Louisiana have more than doubled their use. The only constant has been the states in the Northeast, who have been using petroleum products throughout the time period. Overall, the use of petroleum products has been increasing.

Natural Gas Energy 19602003 LouisianaTexas Although the usage of Natural Gas is high, it has been decreasing on a per person basis for the last 20 years in the states that were the largest users. On the other hand, some states have started to increase their usage.
